On sale for just $6. I have a bunch but never seen one rest like this before. I guess that’s why people call them peacock “goby” gudgeons!

Hey! I hate to have my first post here just asking for help, but Im a worried snail papa. My tank has been going for about 2 months now. Its 5 gallon fresh blackwater setup with 8 neocaridina shrimp and 1 mystery snail (as well as a half dozen bladder snail hitchhikers). Herbert the snail had some growth on him today when i got home. This morning it wasn't there but i did just add some alder cones (presoaked) for tannins yesterday. Im thinking its just a microfauna bloom or bacterial growth from that, but I want to be sure. Im still new to having a tank so its all searches and guess work. I went in with some tweezers and gently brushed most of it off of him, it came off in strings of brown clumps. He seems to be acting normal now, just grazing and cruising around the tank so i dont think he's destressed. Anyways thanks for taking the time to read this mess. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

First time keeping saltwater fish. Started on the 11/22 using the recommended amount of Dr. Tim's and bio starter. Test kit was still in the mail, so didn't notice the ammonia was only at 0.5ppm until 12/1. Added more to get it up to 2ppm. Nitrate and nitrite were still at 0ppm.

I've added a small amount of bio maintain since then, but otherwise let it work its magic.

So a week and a half later, and I took the test in the pic above. There's definitely some change to nitrate/nitrite, but I could convince myself that ammonia is anywhere from 0.5ppm to 2ppm depending on lighting. Maybe I'm colorblind. It's especially hard to decipher through photos (which I just started taking today).

I'm hoping to get the fish by the 18th so I can have them ready for a Christmas surprise. I know patience is a virtue when it comes to fishless cycling, but am I screwed? I have another option to get pre-cycled filter material, but I was hoping to grow this on my own.

If it matters, I'm using the 10L kreisel from jellyfishart.com. Hoping to order the jellies on the 16th so they arrive by the 18th. They ship with a pre-cycled filter, but something about introducing all of that at the same time makes me nervous.

Literally 24 minutes of my gold laser cory just relaxing while other things do (or don't) happen around him.

Got this tank for free from my brother so I've been creating a nice little community tank. I've got a betta (probably male I think), 4 green catfish, 1 black mystery snail, some ghost shrimp, some guppies and cherry shrimp also from my brother.

Looks nice, a little red from the wood, and a little green from a bit of algae. Got the light on an 8 hour timer now rather than it's built in day simulator. (The picture is more red from the light doing a sunset.)

I've had some neons show up dead after putting them in a few days ago, my impatient ass went to two different stores to get the number I wanted so now I have to just guess if it's the stores or if my betta specifically hates the neons. Other fish are doing fine and the shrimps and guppies have been with the betta for like a month and a half.

It's a 20 long. I have 10 white cloud minnows, a few celestial danios and three pygmy cories currently at summer camp in a bucket with a sponge filter. I am trying to decide if I should leave them there and replace a gallon a day or chuck them back in the tank and watch ammonia like a hawk. I have a RO filter so water changes are no problem but I just can't decide which approach is best.

And yes, I know this could have all been prevented with better planning. Let's just stipulate that that ship has sailed.

Simple tank with some crypts, java fern, anubis, and hairgrass. Much of the riccardia melted off.

They seem to prefer "soilent green" to the "community plus," but these guys will eat just about anything.

[CW: talk about losing fish]

I was so excited to get some more peacock gudgeons to join my one lonely one in a big, planted, 50 gallon+ indoor pond. I got them from the incomparable Dan's Fish. Followed his instructions to float the bags then add the fish.

For a day or so, everything seemed okay. Then it seemed like I couldn't see any of the peacock gudgeons for a couple of weeks. I didn't think much of it, as I know they can be shy while they're getting settled in.

One evening I noticed the first little dried out fishie on the floor. I wondered about the rest, but after a few seconds of searching about, I didn't see any others. The next evening I looked more closely and tangled up in the cables and tubes on the floor around the pond I found the other three.

I'm sad, but also I know they're just fish and these things happens sometimes. I hope I can learn how to prevent this in the future, if possible.

Interestingly, my local Petco had two peacock gudgeons, too. I brought them home, kept them in a mini quarantine (with a lid lol), and then drip acclimated them and added them to my mini-pond at night when the lights were almost 0%, one new fish per night. It has been almost two weeks, and both seem to have settled in, showing their cute curious faces sometimes on my underwater livestream or in person at the surface. Though Dan's Fish doesn't mention it, Aquatic Arts mentions that they can jump, especially in the first couple of weeks.

What do I think is going on? What do you think is going on?

  • Could it be the stress of different environmental conditions? Dansfish keeps fish in relatively hard 8.2 pH water (16dGH, 16dKH). In NYC, my water is 6.8pH and very soft with 1 dKH and 2dGH.
  • Could it be the stress of how they were added? The jumpers were added all 4 at the same time, and the lights were on.
  • Could it be the lack of drip acclimation? For fish coming in the mail I know it makes sense to not drip acclimate, but now I wonder if it's better to keep them in a small acclimation tank and only then introduce them to the rest of their new family.

Moved about a month ago, but only two weeks ago did I finally move my tank. Decided it was a good chance for a rescape! Loving my new layout, and the plants are already growing. I bet in two more weeks the carpet will be almost complete

Instead of giving a regular feeding I kept a bit of prepared repashy in Dora and had my Barlus underwater camera trained on it. Every kind of fish and even the shrimp came over to enjoy it! Peacock gudgeon, gold laser corys, platinum medaka ricefish, and white cloud mountain minnows all came by for a nibble.

Clip I captured from my 24/7 indoor pond underwater livestream.

I live in EU where fish medications can be hard to get by. Therefore i treat most issues with salt. The question is:

Can i use salt for water treatment systems in fish tanks?

From what i see, it is pure salt although a bit larger crystals than regular salt.

I have been using salt for ponds up til now, but it can be hard to find, especially during winter seasons, and also fairly expensive compared to filter salt.

Howdy folks, I’ve recently gotten in to the aquarium life and I got really lucky to live near a really neat aquarium centered store. Though I would like to compare prices to online, but I want to avoid amazon by any means since I just don’t want to support them. What are some online shops you’ve all had good results with? I’m mostly looking for foods and plants for freshwater fish. In a few years after getting comfortable I want to move on to saltwater.

(Unsure if I’m doing it wrong, but I seem to only be able to upload one image. See below for more).

I’m less than one week away from my anniversary with this tank. One whole year, and a whole lot of changes.

Sometimes I miss how fresh and clean it looked in the early-mid stages, especially when the Limnophilia Aromatica was bushy. But I love how it looks now, so colorful and a bit messy.

For any first starting their tank and getting buyers-remorse if it looks odd or ugly to start, just remember that it’s gonna grow and change!
