Google can't make a move in 2025 without veering into the realm of generative AI, and the release of the Pixel 9a is no exception. Curiously, the AI experience on this phone may not match what you've seen from the company's high-end smartphones. Google has confirmed to Ars that the phone's lower memory prevented it from implementing the full suite of Pixel AI features. You can still talk to Gemini by holding the power button or opening the Gemini app, but the on-device Gemini Nano model has seen a downgrade on the 9a.

Pros:

Sturdy, premium build with Gorilla Glass Victus+, aluminum frame, IP67 rating.

Brighter and bigger display with HDR10+ support.

Decent performance, great thermal behavior.

Excellent videos, great selfies.

Nice speakers.

Polished One UI 6.1, entitled to at least 6 generations of OS upgrades.

Cons:

No charger in the box, and not very fast to charge.

Fingerprint reader not very fast.

Underwhelming camera performance (except videos and selfies), no telephoto.

The virtual proximity sensor for turning off the screen during calls is not as good as a physical one.

No more microSD card support.

Expensive at launch.

TL;DR

Multiple Pixel phone users are reporting significant boosts in Geekbench GPU scores after updating to the Android 16 beta.
Android Authority can confirm that Pixel phones are performing better in this benchmark since launch, but that this is also the case on the most recent Android 15 stable release.
The reason for this performance increase hasn’t been confirmed but likely has to do with recent GPU driver updates.
