Peertube

I'm looking for one that's for Android and on F-droid

I want to start uploading a handful of retro tech videos, revolving around old media formats and video gaming platforms.

For the life of me I can't find an instance that would be a good fit, and has open registration plus uploads enabled.

As a last ditch effort, I'd like to ask if anyone else has any leads?

The web interface freezes often for me, so I usually use mpv like mpv https://spacepub.space/w/7XEaaDCywRALEbT64Q758T, but it takes around 1-3 minutes for mpv to actually load the video. Is there a way for me to reduce this long wait time?

I have plenty of technical peertubers on TILVids, but I'm interested in finding any fun gaming peertubers if anyone can make any recommendations. I've started posting some myself, but I don't exactly want to watch my own stuff :-D .

PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.

Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform : With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.

If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.

I upload a mix of videos about games, dev logs, music, and occasional random stuff I made (including ytps). So a general purpose instance with longevity would be ideal. Thanks!

Hey everyone, I saw this post about peertube channels being able to be seen as communities on lemmy, but I noticed that the comments don't show on the community post.

I was wondering if anyone else was tracking anything about this already, or any other peertube to lemmy integrations, like the embedded video playback from peertube (new feature) or peertube's remote account features (comment using any fediverse account) not working with Lemmy users (at least not me right now).

Hi everyone, I recently made a peertube instance and I see the potential!

But the discoverability is absolutely lackluster. It must be possible somehow to see and sort videos that are out there.

If I search for minecraft videos on my instance for example, it obviously shows only the other instances I federate with.

But to find new instances I search through joinpeertube.org‘s elasticsearch and get the most unrelated stuff.

I was recently asked to submit a pr to framasofts gitlab but the signup/signin is bugged.

This is what I mean with stuff needs to be easier. Any ideas?

Preferably based in a based jurisdiction - one that doesn't take down claims.

The way I see it, the mobile app ecosystem for PeerTube has yet to take off, in spite of the fact that it has a seemingly decent API. More people appear to be using the platform than ever before, which is great, but we still seem to be lacking a general ecosystem that Mastodon or even Lemmy has.

To my knowledge, these are the only apps I've ever found that work with PeerTube:

• Thorium: Supports video playback and sign-in, doesn't support comments or replies or seemingly any social features?
• P2Play: Seems to support commenting, but abandoned 3 years ago or so.
• NewPipe: Actually pretty good as a player, but not really designed around the social API at all. Makes sense, given the app is more of a "download and play videos without an account" type of video app.
• FediLab: Supposedly supports PeerTube, actually seems like a featureful client, but I've always kind of felt iffy about whether a general multi-platform app could make for a good experience.

It just feels as though we're lacking a quality mobile client for PeerTube, and I think it's a missed opportunity. Do we currently now of any other efforts out there to build for the platform?

This is something I've been trying to figure out on my end. I run a community instance for creators at https://spectra.video/, and so far it's been a pretty good situation. The community is fairly cozy, we don't have many problems with spam, and we connect with a handful of really good partner instances that we like and trust.

Here's the thing: my server keeps growing.

In like the last few months, my server's user count has ballooned up to 320 users, from about 50 or so. That's in spite of the fact that I'm incredibly conservative about user registration, and screen just about everyone who registers to cut down on trolls and spam.

Object Storage is sitting at half a terrabyte for video, which in the grand scheme of things is actually not terrible. But, the server is not beefy for constant video transcoding, and setting up infra to make that pain easier is not cheap. At all.

At the end of the day, I'm going to have to think about migrating to a more powerful VPS, to setting up runners on some kind of cloud GPU architecture, to thinking about whether to segment out my database to some kind of externally hosted solution. All of this stuff is expensive, migration is messy, and trying to support all of this seems complicated.

I feel like, within the next few months, we're going to see an influx of YouTube migrations similar to what happened with Reddit and Twitter. I don't think any particular instance can truly be ready for that to happen, but I'd like to at least try to prepare for the worst.

Is anybody else thinking about how to deal with this?

I cannot find another instance that I feel like will accept my content without dividing it in different instances.

I like posting different things like clips from older cartoons (both English and Italian), videogame clips or tutorials, tech tutorials, repost memes... and I wanna stream me playing videogames. I don't wanna see any NSFW.

I used to like an instance called yt.is.nota.live but didn't use it for quite some time. Checking back now, looks like it's no longer being hosted.

With how instances are setup and moderated I indeed feel like I would have to make multiple accounts in different instances.

Should I just look into creating my own instance? I am fine with creating multiple channels to divide the content, just don't want to make multiple accounts to remember both credentials and where they are hosted.

I know, the platform isn't ready, the platform needs more creators, the platform has technical improvements to do...We could have said the same for Lemmy before the Reddit blackout, the same for Mastodon on Twitter.

The main limitation I see at the moment are PeerTube instances, badly communicating, from what I've been able to realize, and there are no reference instances as it was for Lemmy.

So I went down the list of PeerTube clients in F-Droid, and the only two that let me pick my instance / login are TubeLab and P2Play. They look nice but there's a problem: they don't understand login with 2FA, and I don't really want to drop 2FA as I always use the extra security whenever it's available.

Any other Android client you're aware of that would work for me?

In the meantime, I'll open a feature request for those two apps.

Uuh nevermind, I answered my own question: when I went to open an issue with TubeLab, the repo says it's now part of FediLab - which, inconveniently, doesn't come up when you search for PeerTube in F-Droid.

I installed FediLab, and lo and behold... 2FA!

And with that, voila: I'm logged in:

Can you have a private paywall on a peertube instance so users will have to pay to watch content on a peertube instance? An instance that does not federate? Is the following functionality possible for a peertube instance? Would be useful for exclusive content.

1. Private room/spaces were no one can join unless invited

2. An API call to send a invite to a user to join a room/space

3. An API call to allow a matrix user to join a private room/space

4. An API call to remove (not ban) a user from a matrix space/room

5. Peeetube instance will not federate (instances will not grab channels and videos from other instance and other instances cannot grab channels and videos from this instance)

6. Peertube instance is private (Users cannot view channels or videos on instance unless they are logged in)

7. Disable signup

8. Create an account using an API call (Be able to create an account for a user via an API call)

9. Disabling an account using an API call (Be able to prevent an account from viewing channels and videos, not banning an account but disabling it)

10. Prevent users from creating an channel and uploading videos

11. Disable comments

12. Disable likes and dislikes

13. Disable download option for videos

I can't seem to find any ML PeerTube instances.

If there is no ML PeerTube instance, then that could be a potential Lemmygrad project. Also someone made a good point about giving tons of initial storage space.

If it were up to my opinion. the short answer is yes. if the topics/genres that I were interested in, i.e. I searched for, I clicked, gets recommended more.

For a privacy perspective it might be a bad thing depending how it was implemented, it's quite unlikely that the algorithm is is done externally, or locally on a users machine, it would likely be from the server and stored there too. unless we have something like a peertube client that could sync the preference data between devices.

either that, or we'll have to encrypt it. if we so care much about privacy. but decentralization definitely helps.

Now on the topic of addiction is a whole another discussion, it may vary for user to user. I'm not an expert in this but for me I can control what I want to do fairly well. I tend to scroll through the recommendations at leisure, when I want to look for useful information like guides, tutorials, advice on a skill i'd use the search bar, categories, or try sift through the recommendations.

a while ago I was mindlessly scrolling and quickly made aware of it, I despised the feeling and avoided doing the same thing. other might be still stuck in a loop. i'm... not sure.

the recommendations from algorithm are the ones that had "gems" aka information that would helped me tremendously that I wasn't specifically looking for and higher quality videos. It's like a double edged sword, depending on the user's intent, or.. control of their intent.

that is definitely a problem to some people, so we should give them an option to make it more adhd friendly.

I'd like to say in defense of algorithms if it were something I knew what it was doing. I'd be in favour of. it's more of a discoverability function, like what's poppin on peertube y'know? I haven't found anything good for a while, it's very rare and like mostly found on accident or via youtube. maybe it's just that we haven't seen any massive adoption here, but I don't really know, what do you think?

In 2018, a platform was launched to build an open, decentralized web for videos. In 2021, the network is still struggling to grow. I take a look into some of the problems with content discovery, along with some small suggestions for instance admins.
