An island crawling with hideous ape-men! A mysterious scientific genius with a taste for playing God! And a collection of medical experiments so grotesque you'd think somebody had been reading The Island of Dr. Moreau after drinking an entire bottle of gin!

Welcome to The Gland Men of the Island, where science has gone completely batshit crazy!

It starts innocently enough. A party of explorers finds itself on a remote island, surrounded by tropical jungle and some rather peculiar-looking inhabitants.

And by peculiar, I mean horrible, slobbering, red-eyed brutes with enormous arms, hairy bodies, twisted little legs, and faces that look like evolution got drunk and fell down the stairs!

Are they men? Are they apes? Did somebody breed a gorilla with a particularly ugly politician?

Whatever the hell they are, they're enormous, powerful, and apparently none too pleased about having visitors.

Before our unfortunate explorers can figure out what's going on, they're swept into a nightmare involving secret laboratories, bizarre medical procedures, and a scientific scheme so outrageous it could only have come from the golden age of pulp magazines.

A glorious parade of monstrous biological experiments, sinister scientific ambitions, hideous creatures, and enough thoroughly questionable medical theory to give a modern endocrinologist a nervous breakdown.

And honestly, who could resist a story with a title like The Gland Men of the Island?

Come on. Ya gotta read that!

Another late-1930s Doc Savage knock-off. It ran under the Charles Stoddard house name (same one used for Thunder Jim Wade).

Crane Fremont is the tall, hard, mysterious trouble-shooter type who shows up with a fancy plane when the regular authorities can’t handle something, and his boys are the standard brawler-plus-knife-man combo

Story opens with an undercover Army Intelligence officer posing as an explorer whose plane goes down in the Peruvian jungle during a freak El Niño storm season.

What he finds is a hidden operation run by a massive, sweating, betel-chewing fat man named Dellara, complete with gas masks, armed thugs, and a girl who may or may not want to be rescued. There’s a stretch of jungle that has a nasty reputation for swallowing men whole, some kind of gas weapon, and a whole mess of natives getting worked over while the crooks try to keep their secret locked down.

Fremont’s plane shows up at the end of the first chapter, so you know the real trouble is just starting. It’s pure formula adventure pulp: jungle, gas, a grotesque villain, a pretty girl in the middle of it, and the hero’s crew coming in hard.

The usual 1930s “somebody’s building something nasty in the wilderness and our guy has to smash it” setup. Fast, violent, and exactly what you’d expect from another Doc clone of the period.

I feel same way. I have so many of them, not an issue for me.

Lots of people rake in profits from Kindles. Designers, builders, writers, editors, sellers, etc. None of that bothers me. Few people work on things that don't generate profits.

Yeah. It has a magnet and sticks to back of my phone.

Thunder Jim Wade is pure 1941 pulp trash in the best way. This is the first story in the series, written by Henry Kuttner under the house name Charles Stoddard for Thrilling Adventures.

People get chloroformed, shot, stabbed, gored, and thrown out of windows. The bad guys are pure pulp scum who will torture a guy for a map and then try to sell the secret of an invincible metal to the highest bidder.

Now, I'm different that most people, because for some reason, I really really love knock-offs. I'm not sure why, I just do. And this character is an obvious Doc Savage knockoff: tall, lean, mysterious past, two sidekicks (one big and brawling, one small and knife-happy), a secret Pacific island base, a network of agents who radio him when shit goes down, and a ridiculous super vehicle that can fly, roll like a tank, or go underwater.

He even gets raised by a lost civilization that turns him into a polymath badass. The whole setup screams “we saw what Street & Smith is doing and we want some of that money.”

The story itself kicks off in the sweaty, filthy streets of Singapore. A slick Eurasian crook and his crew of hardcases snatch an old archaeologist and a weird little statue that looks like a man-bull. From there it turns into a chase across half the damn planet, with Thunder Jim and his boys smashing into kidnappers, waterfront dives, crooked cops, and eventually a hidden valley full of ancient Cretan leftovers who still worship a Minotaur.

The storie also involves a super-light metal alloy that could build tanks the size of battleships, a treasure map stuffed inside a figurine, bulls trained to gore anything that moves, and a high priest with a branding iron and a grudge.

It’s fast, stupid, violent, and loaded with the usual 1940s adventure-magazine racism and colonial nonsense.

This story was hard to track down, and I plan to post more stories of Thunder Jim. If you like your knock-off heroes cold-eyed and your lost cities full of people who still swing swords at machine guns, this is the one!

A dude walks out of a place that should have killed him twice over, and the people who drag him into the light can’t figure out what the hell they’re looking at.

His clothes are half burned off. His skin is raw and blistered in ways that don’t match any ordinary fire. He talks like someone who has seen things no living man is supposed to see, and he keeps smiling in a way that makes the hard asses around him start checking their guns.

He shouldn’t be breathing. He shouldn’t be standing.

The man who crawled out of hell has memories that don’t line up with anything on this side of the grave, and whatever followed him back is still hungry. People start dying in ways that don’t make sense. Rooms feel wrong. The ones who get too close to him stop sleeping right.

And the longer he’s back, the clearer it gets that he didn’t come out alone.

John H. Knox wrote this one for Dime Mystery Magazine in 1934, and it’s one of his wilder rides. It’s part detective story, part mad science nightmare, and part “we just dug something up that was never supposed to leave.”

I felt the exact same way until I got my small xteink. It's my carry-around go-to reader for when I'm running around, or going to park, etc. and I love it!

But in bed at night I have my larger, backlit Pocketbook that I read on.

I see what you're saying, but Bezos hasn’t run Amazon day-to-day since 2021, Andy Jassy has been CEO since then. Warehouse policies and break rules aren’t his to set anymore.

And he definitely doesn't have anything to do with the Kindles now.
