That's the problem: It wasn't enough. Companies like Gilead are only interested in returns of billions and billions.
Getting even $100 million back (profit) after spending 10 years developing a drug would be considered a huge waste of time. They only get to keep the patent for ~20 years which means such a drug would only be returning ~5 million a year... A drop in the bucket
The US subsidizes the cost of developing life-saving drugs like this precisely because it isn't economical to do so otherwise. USAID also guarantees minimum sale amounts of US-funded/developed drugs.
Without USAID a big part of the benefit to working with the US to develop new drugs/treatments is gone.
Even after he loses his farm. Even after his friends and family cut him out of their lives. Even after he goes bankrupt from medical debt.

This seems to be a flaw in the concept of pensions, not an indication that retirement age should be increased.
Pensions exist on the assumption that there will always be an increasing number of workers paying into them over time and that the number of workers will never shrink. They also assume that pensions will be taken for n number of years after retirement before the pensioner dies.
All these things are bad assumptions. They're actually just wishful thinking!
A better system would be something like Social Security but instead of paying out based on how much you put in it would just pay out a universal income no matter how much you worked or how much money you made.
It should be a reward for reaching retirement age: You put in your 40 years or whatever time seems reasonable and from then on you're guaranteed a minimum income.
Not everyone works. Not everyone pays into the system at all but this is fine! Should mothers who raised the next generation retain zero benefits for their work? Should their benefits be reduced because they gave up work for decades in order to raise children? No, that would be unjust and stupid.
If the rich don't want to pay into these benefits they can go live somewhere else. That's fine! It's not like they're spending their wealth anyway! If the wealth of the rich only grows that means they're extracting it from the economy and not contributing!
Disobey in advance: Put up a pride flag (even if there's no LGBTQ folks in your home). Hand out banned books to children (and especially tell them it was banned!). Hire some minorities. Tell kids that religions that preach hate aren't cool.
Point it that billionaires never have normal people's best interests in mind. That no one should ever be that rich. That earning any income outside of a presidential salary is unconstitutional and downright corrupt.
Tell them that Elon Musk is an illegal immigrant. That selective enforcement of the law is evil. That the people that voted for Trump won't be spared. That fascism will end up taking away everyone and everything they love. That it will corrupt their favorite institutions. That it will turn their children against them and break up their families. That making desperate enemies of every day people leads to endless violence.
Don't shut up about it either.

I would've expected the Trump administration to take a bit longer to follow Hitler's example... He too had problems finding enough room to jail his "undersirables". So he built facilities to handle them all.
It started with normal prison-like work camps but eventually those facilities started including tools for mass murder like ovens. There were just too many people to get rid of!
How long before we start hearing about unexplained deaths in these facilities? How long before their jailers start executing people for minor offenses (real or perceived)? How long before we start hearing about detainees asking for money to pay off the guards (or their employers) to keep them alive?
