I'm happy that they are letting a open discussion on federation happen in their fluxer developers channel, they want to get it right, so slow and steady is the path they are taking. It's a high priority in their roadmap on github

Project Nomad would be perfect, I would just have to get the resources before said apocalypse but it sounds like a neat little project just in case. I also would use kiwix for reading, idk.
Honestly, syncthing, croc, vaultwarden send, Send (fork of firefox's send before they discontinued it, still works), Privatebin, etc.
