Its funny to me, and ive commented on it before, but the slop out there is all corporate AI (even down to power use, a common complaint I see that really doesnt apply to local llm). The appearance is due to the algos on social media as you mention.

Ive started to plan a cyberdeck for fun, but also as a potential mobile device approach going forward. I've started getting my family into decentralized solutions by having my wife (aka my litmus test) use some clients for matrix, Lemmy, etc, and see what she likes. I plan to deploy for family and friends in the same way I do my media server - its here, I won't put this elsewhere, access to one thing is access to all things, here's some handy links!

So to sum up - yeah I think when people see decentralized social media it reminds them of what friendster, MySpace, twitter, etc were before it went from 'new' to 'algorithmically sorted with suggestions you have no choice over'.

I'd say experiences is still a good answer, its what we ask for when it comes to the kids. They have tons of toys already, they don't need more, and I'm too particular about tech for my.kids for anyone to buy them tech (without it just getting returned).

We go to animal preserves, science centers, art museums, renaissance fairs, etc. Tickets only for the kids, its more like "pick an event/activity" than anything else I guess.

Sometimes we wait for family to visit so they can go too, sometimes we just take lots of pictures.

Aside from that....

• Rock tumblers are great, but loud, so talk with parents first.
• There are some great kits out there to learn to sew.
• There are electronics kits for kids that basically snap together in different arrangements for different circuits
• Marble kits (where you build different layouts) can be fun
• Terrariums with guides are always a good option IMO
• Magnet blocks are also really fun and can be reused a bunch

I have a windows VM to run some specific tools I need for work. Well, multiple, I have one particular tool that still is useful for certain projects that needs Windows 7 for example.

Not technically running on my desktop though. Ive got a proxmox host for it that I remote into from whatever to do what I need to.

There is even a Christmas special coming out this year. Paw Patrol: The Movie (which came out in 2021) isnt the newest, The Mighty Movie is (2023). Which is also funny because the Paw Patrol Movie came out in 2016, and there already was a Mighty Pups movie in 2018.

And 4 more movies from then until the 2021 version. And 2 between the Paw Patrol and Mighty Pups movies from 2016 and 2018 respectively.

As a parent I must ask - which one of the many paw patrol movies do you think is "The Paw Patrol movie"?
