They don't care how they're remembered, as long as people keep saying their names.

This is the only thing that could explain Musk's actions of the last several months as a believable rational choice. He realized he is not going to be around to see immortality or brain downloads or whatever, so he has to make his name and image immortal instead.

Of course, there are numerous other reasons that could explain it, many of them personality flaws.

If that sports car were an MX5 Miata or a BRZ/86, it would be a massive improvement if you could get a degree even from a state university for that price!!

Oh Lemmy, I saw all the lightning bugs in the trees last night, blinking fast as hell because of the high temperature, and I thought of you!

I was just discussing my raggedy-ass yard and it’s contribution to the local fauna.

Just the other day my son was chasing the fireflies in our front yard.

…That front yard I was feeling bad about not mowing because the weeds mixed in with the grass quickly grow tall flowers above the head.

I think I want to keep helping those blinky-bois.

The Cybertruck and the Starship are some incredible shiny metal pyrotechnic wonders he has given the world!

It’s in line with the one “skill” musk seems to have: find promising teams to “lead” and take the public credit for their work, then when the great teams’ work gets attention, that confirms musk’s idea that HE is the key creative and technical force, then he starts forcing the company to do things HIS way and the products start blowing up even more than usual.

So we should be right about at that enshittification inflection point on Grok.

(I guess it’s not really “enshittification” since it’s done for megalomaniacal reasons and not for profit-driven ones, but I liked the sound of it)

Bit of an old post, but your title spoke directly to the core of my being.

Fortunately I do not have to deal with it in my home life in quite the usual way you mean since it’s with my wife and kid, but it was and absolutely would still be with roommates.

But yeah just the energy drain of knowing you are being perceived and then imagining and evaluating that perception from their perspective… For example, I will do basic outdoor stuff in a consciously arranged way just in case somebody is driving past or looking out a window across the road.

I figure it is Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, often seen with ADHD, plus an upbringing in a conservative culture where basic communication was via criticism. Combine those in a nice hyperfocus crucible, and my brain begins assembling them most likely put-downs before I even start an activity.

Oh and finish by sprinkling on some Gifted Child syndrome. When everything comes easily during your formative years thanks to hyper focus and minimal socializing, it can mess up how your lizard brain reacts to challenges.

Fortunately, realizing these things are true makes them a lot easier to deal with.

Oh yeah, mods and crazy maps and worldedit, he will be all over it.

I guess I’ll need to install it on my PC too, so I can visit his amusement parks, zoos, and haunted houses.

Thanks to Lemmy and Linux I’ve been enjoying the internet in much the same way for some time now.

I even use a desktop PC on a daily basis and it just feels right.

Well, it’s desktop PC but I have the main monitor on an arm so that it can hover over my lap while on the couch. I’m a middle aged dad and my family likes to hang out in the same room together, so it is much more practically usable for me as a couchtop.

Whatever shadow of a hope I had that the people of this country would not gobble up low-effort lies about Iran just had this comment appear from the shadows and shiv it in the fucking liver.

When I look at her eyes in a photo or video, I see the kind of evil where as she squeezed the life out of a kitten she would not laugh, cry, or grit her teeth. She would just stare, then tilt her head like a curious alien or Labrador without blinking.

Please note that I am a fan of both dogs and space, so I am sending zero insults their direction in that comparison. It's like if I were to compare the number of times Trump shit his pants throughout his first term with the number of times my baby boy -- born right after the inauguration -- shit his pants over the same interval.

My official guess for the name of this new slavery program is the "Essential Guest Worker" bill/order.
