Modern user-friendly Linux in a nutshell:

"Hey that kernel update finished in the background, unless you were bored enough to stare at this window for the last 3 whole minutes. It would be best to reboot your machine as soon as it works for you, boss! 😎"

Please note however that modern user-friendly linux does not use emojis in notifications about system updates. That was just for fun.

I use mint btw

Do you have the leverage to get those brakes as far down as they need to to stop safely?

Hi there friend, would you kindly get the heck out of my nightmares?

Responding to the rest of your comment: I love driving a manual transmission. My first three cars were manuals, and we have two automatics right now, but my next car in a year or so will probably be something fun and agile with a manual. Or EV of course, depending on what's available for the price at the time.

So, my middle aged ass plays the microtransaction-laden bullshit known as Roblox because my 3rd grader and all his friends love it.

It doesn't even have a Linux version but thanks to the project "sober" it plays absolutely fantastically on Linux. I think they claim 2x the performance of the windows version. I just know I have a powerful but old system (8c/8t 9700k cpu and gtx1080 gpu) and I can lock it at 144fps at 1440p and it uses like 20% of my system resources. Not that it's a visually demanding game, lol.

Going all-in on my switch to Linux (my win10 partition for dual booting lasted less than two weeks) has had zero negative impact on my ability to play the games I want. In fact, it has led to me using my PC a lot more and my phone a lot less. Feels good.

There's an effect I see in situations like this where the people in a big hurried rush end up being slow asses because apparently they don't care about this working efficiently, they just care about when they can stop waiting.

On a plane these are the people who leap out of their seat and block your row, only to start searching for their bag once it's their turn to get off the plane.

I see the same from drivers at red lights. If there are multiple lanes waiting to go, and one car has to inch forward every 5 seconds even though they are already way past the line, then in my very limited anecdotal experience there's like a 90% chance when the light turns green they just sit there for a few seconds after I start going.

A few rapid fire ideas.

Don't rule out medication. It can be the thing that lets you get over the first hurdle so you see what it's like on the other side.

Go for variety. I'm a software engineer but I am doing very physical and mechanical things in the evenings, at least until winter. Then I can do some tech shit

Be intentional with your time and resources. Think about what benefits the journey of your project will have for your personal well being. Being conscious of the benefits of an activity lowers the the threshold for the effect of "just push through and then you get used to working on it and keep going and now it's your hyper focus."

Own your decisions and keep them to yourself at first if you have to. If it's a hobby you're interested in, you will probably do a good job learning and you will produce good results, and that will help build the kind of deep fundamental confidence that you can't just decide to have.

I am very much an ADHD + Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria type. There's a related issue called Avoidant Personality Disorder. I have gone nuts on my conduction projects for my hobbies without constantly including family and friends like is typical in my circles when doing big yard projects.

So while my advice inevitably will not work for everybody -- we're all different and we have to reverse engineer our own brain & body manuals -- hopefully some of this will make sense in this case.

It was enough of a mess that we did a case study on it in a business class in grad school.

The US is a country where dozens of millions of people enthusiastically voted for exactly what we're getting. The concentration camps, the turbo genocide, the loss of rights, the bigotry -- these are requested features, not unintended consequences because that smooth talking senile old man pulled the wool over everybody's eyes.

And don't forget that the question of whether there will even be an election for somebody to replace Trump was already a thing before the election.

So yeah, Newsom totally represents what we DON'T want the opposition party to be. He's conservative clean-cut corporate america, just with a little attitude now to attract attention.

But holy shit please see the full context the american voters have to deal with. Not only do we have a deeply broken and biased voting system that is impossible to change, meaning we will only ever get 2 viable choices, but the political direction of the country is already going at breakneck speed in the wrong direction.

It might be that the accelerationists are right, and that things won't improve until there's a revolution and a better new form of government. And I am quite happy with the thought of starting fresh. But if we get to the point of party primaries are occurring, and they let me vote, I'll choose the progressive that wants to help people. If we get to the general election, I will choose the viable candidate that's going to do the most good and the least evil.

The time to get a progressive candidate in the white house is now (assuming there's an election, etc). In November 2028 the only thing left to do is signal your preference between the two remaining candidates or refuse to do so.

I live in a swing state so I personally can't stomach any general election action except the harm reduction one. Yeah it would be great to replace the whole system, but if I am standing in a voting booth on a November morning looking at a fascist R next to a corpo D next to a few other candidates who will get zero electoral votes, it means we the people have already failed to nominate a progressive and/or replace the government.

it's not even an insult, it's just stupid and always has been

I agree with you.

But you know who doesn't agree with us? Aggressive hateful bigoted trumper assholes. And when you throw such a non-insult their way, it is their own hate and prejudice that turns it into something they take as an insult. At best it shines a light on the shitty attitude by turning it against the wielder, and at worst it gives the targets of their shit a little catharsis.

Even with the more tame versions, like "emotional support truck," I assume we agree that a person who needs and responds well to an emotional support animal are not bad people. But you know who loves to assume that anything like that is a some kind of character flaw? Aggressive hateful bigoted trumper assholes. :)

That's the trick though, especially as you get older. The stuff that sounds like an awesome relaxing reset and will surely be nice at the time, is not always the activity that will actually leave you feeling better afterwards.

A frustrating example is being tired in the middle of the day on a weekend when I wanted to be productive in my hobbies & house work. If I take a nap, will that save me evening or ruin my evening?

There's a lot of trial and error, since we're all different.

I don't know if this is correct about platypuses, but this IS generally how you handle snapping turtles and you are much more likely to deal with one of those.

Their dangerous trick has nothing to do with their legs though. It's their neck. It is very long, very flexible, and fast. If you hold them the wrong way, they can hit you with a reach-around that is very much not the friendly sex move.

Stay tuned for more wildlife handling tips from me, your local halfway engineer-turned-farmer!

Edit to add a photo I found on an informational website about these longbois:

The trick with my ADHD brain is to refer to documentation when I'm hyperfocused on how the thing works for some reason. It doesn't have to be because it's broken, but it could be, lol.

I kind of want to try it. Especially once we get closer to winter. I could test my ability to still work on some planned indoor tech projects while Factorio is installed on my computer.

I bet I'd pass that test.

... unless preying on such hubris is how the factory gets you! Maybe the real test is knowing the only way to win is to not play at all!
