True it is generally regarded as ineffective from a public health perspective. I have known people who relied on it though with some success (in both cases it was a committed relationship and they just relied on it as a temporary stopgap while between birth controls) I'd hazard to say, pulling out is an option if your risk tolerance is high enough, but it's risky as hell since precum often contains sperm as well

One only needs to watch John McAfee's uninstalling McAfee Antivirus video (NSFW) to realize how much of a legend he was.

LGR did a wonderful retrospective when he announced his candidacy for US president. Dude seriously lived life to its fullest and made tons of questionable decisions

People don't remember how he flat out campaigned on some policies that were to the left of Hilary. They don't remember his charisma in the Republican debates, the way he expertly worked crowds back in 2015-16. They ask have forgotten about how he said he'll "drain the swamp" and that he was "self funding his campaign" so he "wouldn't be beholden to any other interests"

Turns out he was just a sad wannabe dictator who can't even manage to control a Latin American nation with the full force of the US Military, let alone establish himself as emperor over the 'states

For me it was shoving a bunch of Teslas in a hole in Las Vegas and calling it a "hyperloop" that was when I fully realized he was entirely full of shit

I really appreciated him around that same era, as he seemed to be the only rich person actually showing any real care or action to try to do something about climate change. Up until him every rich person and every politician seemed to be actively dismissing climate change as a concern. It feels like around 10 years ago was when political discourse finally stopped trying to argue whether or not climate change is real and instead shifted to trying to argue that any actions to prevent climate change were unrealistic or futile

Remember, Musk was building up an electric car company, a home battery company and a solar roofing company through the 2010s. Plus he was pushing for cool space stuff. We were going to have a colony on mars by 2020! Incredible!

It was the whole hyperloop thing that killed it for me. It quickly became apparent as his Las Vegas "hyperloop" was just Teslas in a tunnel that he was full of shit and it put his other lies and half-truths into perspective. Honestly his antics over the last couple of years have killed my interest in space flight. I fucking loved watching rocket launch live streams. I stayed up until 2am to watch the Artemis launch. And now I just can't bring myself to get excited.

I appreciate that he brought Tesla to profitability and Tesla proved to other automakers and consumers that electric cars are viable and cool. I appreciate that SpaceX has completely changed the rocket industry for the better and now every rocket program worth it's salt in the world is trying to replicate the Falcon 9 rocket boosters. But that's all I'll give him. He didn't do the work, he just funded it, and I appreciate that he did fund it when nobody else would but that's it.

I read it more as they're open to having kids but not open to having an STD, which honestly is a pretty sane headspace to be in

Not all men, but always men

"Not all X but it's always X" is a common neonazi saying. Using it in a different context can even be a dogwhistle in some cases

It’s my personal opinion that having sex with a condom is worse than not having sex

Hard disagree. Good sex with a condom is still good sex. Plus if your reason for using a condom is birth control you only need the condom for PIV, and everything else can be completely unwrapped. I don't know about everyone else but I fucking love foreplay and just worshipping my partner's body while they do the same to me. Honestly it's the best part of having sex

Plus there's something super sexy about getting all hot and heavy, teasing and playing then grabbing the condom and unwrapping it. The moment you or your partner break that package open there's a commitment that this thing is going on thos penis because this penis is about to go into this vagina, and it's happening right now, not in 20 minutes after more play, it's happening right now.

Or don't just take my word for it, take GirlOnTheNet's word for it (obviously NSFW!)

The unfortunate thing with birth control is there's always tradeoffs with every method. IUDs can cause intense pain which may or may not go away after a while, the depo shot can cause a loss of bone density if used for a long period of time, condoms are less pleasurable and depending on the specifics may cause additional discomfort. Pulling out requires you to trust your male partner (a huge ask most of the time) surgical sterilization is basically permanent and requires one to undergo and recover from surgery (and for women an extremely invasive one at that)

I mean, it's not completely unrealistic that some alien race builds a generation ship, points it at Sol 3 because it has a strong magnetosphere, conditions for liquid water and a fairly oxygen rich atmosphere then after their 10,000 year journey they discover a race that's just beginning to figure out space flight on the planet previously observed to lack any industrial capabilities. Honestly that would make for a good film, and I'm sure there's science fiction books based on that idea already (Douglas Adams wasn't far off from that with the Galgafrinchians too, only they arrived about 20,000 years before our present day and supplanted neanderthals as the dominant hominid race on Earth)

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 3 points 12 hours ago

I almost wonder if it's like Mt Everest climbers who climb without oxygen tanks, they do it more to prove that they can than for any rational reason

I’m saying different tactics work in different places against different governments.

This is self-evident. Different forms of protest can be more or less effective in different contexts. But protest in general has been effective the world over for many centuries

Having protests banned isn’t a sign of it being effective.

If protest was ineffective the government wouldn't be trying to ban it, they'd be saying "oh there was a protest? I didn't notice!" instead of passing legislation to stop them

What is the goal/point of No Kings and 5051?

Rejection of the manufactured consent that Republicans have been trying to pass a guise of. Protest creates unity for those protesting, encourages further action and increased political awareness and participation. It breaks media narratives. A protest with hundreds of events spread across 50 states with 7 million participants shows a strong rejection of the actions of the federal government and completely breaks all talk of the Republicans having a "clear mandate from the voters" like they were trying to claim at the beginning of 2025. These are not tangible effects but they are extremely important when the federal government not only fails to represent its population but turns its guns upon its own people

Absolutely not. And so they are ineffective. The answer is not more of the same.

So what are you doing then? At least we're out here protesting and not taking it lying down. Change doesn't happen overnight and it takes work.

I wish I could clean and organize my stuff like a normal human and not have my brain turn it into a Big Thing. But I'm clearly making progress!

Some of these boxes were from a couple of moves ago, a couple were much newer. But surprisingly I was able to eliminate 7 boxes just by sorting items out that I have places for and putting them away, sorting some items into a separate tote and repacking the remaining contents into 2 similarly old doom boxes that were previously half full as well.

I now have a neat stack of doom boxes and totes where I previously had a much larger wild pile of collapsing doom boxes and stuff stacked on top of said boxes since it's in a bedroom that we haven't used for anything other than storage since my youngest started sleeping through the night, and the cats like to climb on the boxes and make the mess worse!

My small garage was built in the 40s and has wood siding which was damaged by a recent hail storm. Insurance cut us a settlement check and I decided to challenge myself to repaint the garage myself

The hail mostly damaged the paint, with some small chips in a couple of spots. My plan is to sand the portions that are to be repainted, fill the chips with wood filler and repaint

I'm looking at getting an air compressor (Partly as I'm seeing commentary on it being far easier and faster than rollers, and partly out of buying a tool I might not ever have a decent enough reason to buy in the future that'll be useful to have on hand) and a sprayer to do the bulk of the painting

Given I'm mostly looking to repair some quarter size damage to the paint splottered all over 2 sides of the garage, do I need to sand all of the old paint off before repainting or can I simply paint over the old paint? The old paint is in pretty good shape where the hail didn't sand it away. Looks like its been repainted within the century, possibly even within the last decade, and I'm not changing colors dramatically, just doing a flat "white" over a flat "white" which shouldn't be a very obvious difference after weathering. Basically am I reducing the durability of the paint job if I paint over the existing undamaged matte paint?

Additionally, any other gotchas I should be aware of?

I can provide photos tomorrow of the damage and existing paint if needed

Update: I ended up putting wood filler into the cracks, dents and gouges, sanding flat only where I put in wood filler and then painting over the existing paint and it turned out brilliantly. I only painted two sides of the garage as the other two were not damaged by the hail and have a bunch of overgrowth in the way so I'm planning on coming back this spring to cut back that overgrowth and paint the other two sides so they look just as good. The new paint so far has not shown any care for the sun, extreme heat, strong winds, rain, Aurora Borealis, snow, sleet, ice, extreme cold nor flash-freezes that mother nature has thrown at it since and the new paint simply continues to exist without any visual change

A recent storm damaged the siding of my house so I'll have to have it replaced. The thought occurred to me to run some network cabling behind the new siding (and likely new insulation) while its all pulled off. Should I run standard riser cabling or outdoor-rated cabling if I do so?

Obviously the most ideal solution is standard in-wall but I don't have the appetite for such a project given half the house was built in the 19th century and I know such an undertaking would involve quite a few surprises that I almost definitely lack the know-how to handle, and I'll probably be moving in a couple of years so I don't want to invest too much time or money into the endeavor.

Alternatively is there a good type of conduit I could run instead?

I placed a low bid on an auction for 25 Elitedesk 800 G1s on a government auction and unexpectedly won (ultimately paying less than $20 per computer)

In the long run I plan on selling 15 or so of them to friends and family for cheap, and I'll probably have 4 with Proxmox, 3 for a lab cluster and 1 for the always-on home server and keep a few for spares and random desktops around the house where I could use one.

But while I have all 25 of them what crazy clustering software/configurations should I run? Any fun benchmarks I should know about that I could run for the lolz?

Edit to add:

Specs based on the auction listing and looking computer models:

  • 4th gen i5s (probably i5-4560s or similar)
  • 8GB of DDR3 RAM
  • 256GB SSDs
  • Windows 10 Pro (no mention of licenses, so that remains to be seen)
  • Looks like 3 PCIe Slots (2 1x and 2 16x physically, presumably half-height)

Possible projects I plan on doing:

  • Proxmox cluster
  • Baremetal Kubernetes cluster
  • Harvester HCI cluster (which has the benefit of also being a Rancher cluster)
  • Automated Windows Image creation, deployment and testing
  • Pentesting lab
  • Multi-site enterprise network setup and maintenance
  • Linpack benchmark then compare to previous TOP500 lists

I'm currently decluttering and reducing to get a handle on my home, and I've come to a conundrum of how many plates/bowls/cups/etc do I actually need? I have 2 young kids that we'd prefer not to have to run to the store at 8pm to buy more plates because someone ruined a plate, but very limited cupboard space (small 120-something year old house with a kitchen that was built in the 50s)
