It's special bc Reddit had a lot of close-knit communities that felt like they were more than just another social network. Facebook was always just some company building things, but Reddit seemed like it really was about the people. Spez looked at that and said he'd rather just have a lot of money. I mean... has he even done anything interesting with his money?

btw I don't mean to bring you down, but billionaires always have hangers-on who honestly think the billionaire is some kind of genius and who genuinely want to be just like them, even apart from catching what few scraps they might get off the table.

In some places it'll be the phone company and the power company and the cable TV/internet companies as well. You'd have to coordinate with all 3. And there may be regulations about how close it has to be to the street to enable repairs -- regulations put there for the safety of the workers, as well as to keep the lines away from tree branches that might take them down during a storm.

Who was it that was keeping a list of Jonathan’s crimes, way back in the first 5 chapters or so?

kek it was me, I just fell a bit behind bc piefed.social was down.

  • they interfered with a criminal investigation, back on the 30th when Skinsky got killed and they took off bc they didn't want to get involved even tho they had info that might be relevant. A good lawyer might get "fleeing the scene of a crime" to stick, or maybe even conspiracy, tho idk wht the laws were like there and then.
  • this is more than impersonating a police officer. This is a member of English nobility, falsely acting as an agent of the Kingom of Romania. If this had been discovered it probably would have been a major scandal. A good prosecutor might have got "espionage" to stick. The fact that they're on water and boarding boats probably makes it worse -- not piracy per se, but something partway there.

It's hilarious how these people are always talking about how good and noble they are and how evil, ignorant and corrupt the locals are, all while they themselves are scorning local laws.

Yeah, Mina's awesome. And I'm not gonna say anthing bad against Stoker, since I just found out that he visited Oscar Wilde after Wilde got out of prison. And that analysis is pretty nice...

...BUT! The problem with that analysis is that it's too sure of itself. Reason One: Mina did a great job of identifying several of the most important factors and showing what seems to be the optimal decision. But there's this well-known dictum, which has taken many forms over the years, that "surprise is a force multiplier". Meaning if its obvious that plan A is optimal, and that your adversary knows that, then plan B might actually be optimal because it is unexpected. Reason Two: I'm just an amateur with a gamer's interest in military history, but my impression is that most intel is contradictory, highly unreliable, or showing evidence of intentional deception. For example, Dracula might have paid off Hildesheim to lie about what he did. Or Dracula might be misleading them about being in the water during Mina's trance. Reason Three: intel is always incomplete. Think of how many resources these British people are able to bring to bear, despite being in a faroff country. But this is very close to Dracula's domain, so he's likely to have far more resources or allies than they. For all they know, he's visited Romania before and has dozens of coffins stashed around the country. All that being said, it's still pretty cool that Stoker had Mina make this kind of analysis. I haven't read ahead, and I'm guessing Mina's analysis was correct for plot reasons, but hey maybe it's wrong.

Actually I will say one bad thing about Stoker. His characterization of Hildesheim is borderline antisemitic, and if I was from Slovakia I'd be like wtf. Yeah I know, "time and place", but it still needs to be called out.

When I lived with my cousin, he'd borrow one of my sweatshirts to look "spooky" on Halloween. It was black, fit oversized, and had a nice big hood. So that's one approach.

It's an ancient meme so there are multiple copies floating around. Highest quality seems to be

Looks like it says:

Laibach, Current 93, Raymond Watts, Cabaret Voltaire, Front 242, Klinik, Boyd Rice, Snog, Meat Beat Manifesto,

and the last one I can't make out but it looks like it starts with a P and a T

You have mystic powers. Either that, or a future-tech DeLorean.

They also miss the data you give them!

There are a couple different possibilities, like maybe Dracula has possessed people remotely, or maybe just hired them conventionally, and is having them unload him at an unexpected time. Alternately, maybe the ship and cargo is being taken over by some pirate or some corrupt customs bureaucrat -- if so, it's likely to be the worst career move they've ever made!

Basically, fans of Insane Clown Posse and associated act from the independent Psychopathic Records label they established. The two members of ICP were raised poor and were outcasts in school, so juggalos tend to be open-minded about people who are looked down on and don't have a lot of money.

Frozen peas are great for that too. Goes with a lot of different dishes. just throw in a handful, or make a side-dish.

Did Bowie actually say that? idk but I found that image on Bluesky so it's gotta be true, right?

Errant Bodies, by Chloe Lula (aufnahmeundwiedergabe.bandcamp.com)

industrial techno, 2025

Over the years, SIAMGDA has cultivated a distinct identity at the crossroads of industrial rhythm, organic percussive patterns, and hypnotic soundscapes. Now, with “Resistanz”, the project's sonic architecture expands further. The album opens on a hauntingly ethereal note, MARIE’s vocals hovering like a spectral presence, before escalating into the sharpest contrasts and the most abrasive sonic eruptions SIAMGDA has ever delivered. The interplay between raw percussive power and moments of near-spiritual elevation keeps the listener in suspense, shifting between hypnotic flow and visceral impact.

Mildly Entertaining and Historically Important

If this film had come out in the mid-50's, it could be dismissed as another low-budget, silly outer space invasion movie. However this movie appears to have been the first of such space invasion movies. It opened in March of 1951. Later that year came the openings of "The Thing from Another Planet" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still." Two other 1951 films, "When Worlds Collide" and "Superman and the Mole Men" have some space invader elements, but don't quite qualify for the genre.

The fact that it was shot in six days on a budget of $43,000 makes it more amazing. Compare that to "The Thing From Another World" ($1.6 million) or the "The Day The Earth Stood Still" ($1.2 million). While none of the technical aspects come near those two movies, the movie does have an interesting style and look that foreshadows the 1953 classic "Invaders From Mars" and even has elements from "Invasino of the Body Snatchers". ....

Writhe and Shine makes fun of the alternative underground scene from the inside and shows us that no matter how much black we wear or how moody we seem, we can still laugh at ourselves. Running off and on since 1998, it has been compared to The Addams Family and Cheers. The series follows a group of friends that work at and run The Bastille, the only Goth club in the historic and iconic city of New Orleans.

This strip is from the mid-2010s, you can read the comic strip archive for more. Looks like the artist/writer eventually shifted to other work, though.

I think this meme is from Facebook, circa late 2017 / early 2018 (bc it has "Add Violence" but not "Bad Witch").

EDIT: I thought the image was kinda limited so I made some changes/updates to it.

this is the original image I posted here

This location was an inspiration for Bram Stoker's "Dracula". This image is from a video I looked up for the readthrough of the Dracula novel that @Zagorath@aussie.zone is doing over on !vampires@lemmy.zip .

I don't listen to indie music so I dunno if this is legit, I just thought it was kinda fun.

Grizzly (1976) is the movie for this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, August 31, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT which is 1am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows side-by-side on a computer. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something.

How to watch the movie:

...about a park ranger's attempts to halt the wild rampage of an 18 ft (5.5 m) tall, 2,000 lb (910 kg) man-eating grizzly bear that terrorizes a National Forest, having developed a taste for human flesh. However, a drunken hunting party complicates matters.
...
Critical reception for Grizzly in 1976 was extremely negative, with most critics criticizing the film for being too similar to Steven Spielberg's thriller Jaws. Vincent Canby, from the New York Times, criticized the film's poor plotting, cinematography and editing. He wrote, "Grizzly, which opened yesterday at the Rivoli and other theaters, is such a blatant imitation of Jaws that one has to admire the depth of the flattery it represents, though not the lack of talent involved."[4] Donald Guarisco from AllMovie gave the film a negative review, criticizing the film's script, cheap gore, and overuse of clichés, and saying, "This energetic but clumsy horror effort is too contrived and poorly realized to be worthwhile for most viewers."[5] Film critic Leonard Maltin awarded the film two out of four stars, calling it an "OK rip-off of Jaws".[6]

Despite the negative reviews, Grizzly was the top grossing independent film of 1976, earning nearly $38 million worldwide...
