For context, we have published a white paper explaining the technical details of the project, we are finding a way to show permanent data in a torrent.

https://linktr.ee/retrotorrents

After we started to learn how to verify, compress and decompress ROMs and ISOs with perfect lossless algorithms (e.g., ZIP, CHD, RVZ), we realized that Vimm's Lair includes a text file containing hash calculations. Here is an example:

Thanks for visiting The Vault at Vimm's Lair.

This Nintendo 64 media is verified by No-Intro.

Banjo-Kazooie (USA).z64

We think that putting a metadata file in a torrent may be important, so players get to see the metadata when downloading. For context, someone might abandon one or many files in a hard drive or SD card, and those may eventually become orphans if recovered but cannot find the original torrent they downloaded from (.torrent files and magnet links can be extracted with qBittorrent).

We are looking for someone that has an expertise with this type of metadata and help us conclude which data is more important for what audience. It is likely every system may store different metadata with different importance, for example, a Wii game has a serial number, but also an ID, this ID is necessary for the player that wants to convert the RVZ file into a WBFS file and play it on a modded Wii console, where they must follow this universal standard in USB loader software for the Wii:

USB:/wbfs/Mario Kart Wii [RMCE01]/RMCE01.wbfs

This is the proposed folder structure of an N64 torrent (in the case of a PlayStation game containing 4 CD-ROMs, we just put all of them in the same folder with their name and disc number)

.
└── [RETREYE] [N64] Banjo-Kazooie (USA)
    ├── Banjo-Kazooie (USA).md
    └── Banjo-Kazooie (USA).zip

2 directories, 3 files

and here is an example of the metadata file named "Banjo-Kazooie (USA).md"

Interesting, it sounds like I2P. I will send them an email about it! :)

Thanks etherphon! I will take a look at that private tracker.

You are absolutely correct muusemuuse! but when someone downloads a game as a torrent, they should be able to play it without extracting it. This could save space and convert the players into archivists.

I appreciate the enthusiasm Lindene! In fact, someone in SimpleX suggested IPFS to me a few months back.

It sounds crazy good, there is a lot of good things to say about it, however, unless IPFS becomes mainstream as ThePirateBay made BitTorrent mainstream in the 2000s, there is a low chance a mass audience will adopt a tool that currently requires reading a long manual just to download a video game.

BitTorrent is not perfect, but the fact that a website uses the same file sharing protocol since 2004 says something.

IPFS is a total PITA. It’s not worth it.

We did...It's complicated!

https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/ROM_%26_ISO_sites#BitTorrent

We have found the torrents from the Reddit user r/1G1R to be a great choice, but some of these collections use a file format that does not work on an emulator. For example, the "1G1R - Redump - Sony - PlayStation" torrent has ROM files stored in a .7z archive (does not work with DuckStation). That is Game Over for those that want to download, play and archive every game at the same time. :(

Yeah, we know that being "illegal" puts us in a bad light, perhaps we can embrace it. And apologies for the bad impression! This is the first time we want something as big as the lair, and we know that messing it up would ruin the movement. :)

We have to admit, a private torrent tracker would be more efficient to prevent leeching. And using a torrent client to download a 2MB ROM is extreme, so perhaps including a "playable" 1G1R version would help for those who want the whole collection and then load any of those ROMs in an emulator without extracting the file (e.g. .zip or .chd or .rvz or .wux), which would prevent having two copies of it, however, updating a 1G1R torrent is out of the question, that would just cause more problems.

By the way, you can join the signal group and discuss this further with us! You can send me a direct message as a request or find it in the "RetroTorrents" community page.

Read it here!

For the longest time we have wondered one thing with ROM sites, why don't they use torrents? Is is that difficult?

"Hosting torrents is a total PITA. It's not worth it" - ████

So, we did some research around them and file formats that emulators use like CHD, RVZ and WUX for a few months and may have found a way to preserve retro video games efficiently and perfectly. But truth be told, we don't know if this idea is perfect or has something missing.

We have looked a bit about shadow libraries, but that will come when the site would be ready to deploy.

Currently, we are just experimenting the data with this, since it's free for testing.

Overall, we thought that the wake-up call on video game preservation should start sooner, rather than later. Also, thanks for reading this far!

Signal has refused to update from the Neo Store, now I am using the github version and have a friend as admin to accept new people quickly!

With this in mind, I can always get a new sim without purging the whole group chat!

I really liked your elaboration on the consequences for hosting a torrent site. And forget about money, the only line of defense someone has on the internet is privacy.

Can't be sued if you don't follow the steps of a Ross Ulbricht.

I got the domain name in Njalla, but is not connected to a server or website.

[–] EphraimEscobar@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

I'm sorry, do you mean the domain name?

Recently I learned a reason the most popular BitTorrent Index is still online is because of cloudflare and easydns.com

https://who.is/whois/thepiratebay.org

Obviously cloudflare could never host the site, it probably redirects the users to the servers that host it. Yet for some reason the domain has not been seized by authorities, but like the FBI did it with a Nintendo Switch ROM Site ?.

If you are wondering why I am asking is because of a ROM site concept I have been thinking for the past 9 months (image redirect to my rentry page)

By the way, you don't have to mention such service in public, you can always send me a private message!

We had our separate financial issues recently, but the domain name is not a deal breaker. Only time can tell.

The Rentry page has been updated ever since the first public release back in 1st of February! And new logos have been introduced!

You can see more in SimpleX before official releases of content and discussions!

Another concept for a community image from Randall (CodeCat).

No need to start the repository, I may need to delete it to start fresh. Still working on the workflow to make it easy to deploy.
