What I'm going to say may sound extremely shocking to some folks, but I will say it anyway.

By global standards, Australian politicians are actually pretty decent. Government services work. There are no mass shootings. There is clean water. When you order food, you don't get food poisoning. There are basic labor rights. You don't get beaten or arrested simply for criticizing politicians. When you go to the hospital, you find doctors and nurses. Roads are pretty safe. People just don't know how rare this is.

It's just that many Australians consume rage-baiting social media accounts and raige-baiting Murdoch media all day long.

If you think Australian politicians are truly evil, you really should spend some time in India, Russia, Brazil or Lebanon. You will come back and think politicians in Australia are angels.

Even assuming you hate them, violence and threats aren't the way to go. Fearless psychos aren't afraid of violence. Violence just ensures that ordinary decent people don't want to run for office.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon is not a dummy. He is never going to say something completely illegal. He is an immensely intelligent man. He uses dogwhisles. And you only notice those dogwhisles if you are carefully paying attention

I'll give you a few examples.

The Omar Mosque

French police raided the Mosque Omar in the 11th district of Paris

Immediatly, Melenchon posted this on social media:

French police breaking into a mosque. Humiliating muslims. Is this what you want? War of religions? How can you not hate a country doing this?

Here is the thing.

Everyone in French intelligence heard about the Omar Mosque in the 11th district of Paris. And never in a good way.

This is one of the most extremist mosque in France:

In fact, the Omar Mosque had this extremism reputation for decades :

Mélenchon doesn't give a fuck. He made a tweet that spread like wildfire online about the evil France humiliating ordinary muslims. Not honest, but creating resentment works. That's a way to gain votes.

Here is another thing he did.

He publically accused journalist Ruth El Krief of insulting Islam/Muslims:

You can criticize Ruth El Krief on a lot of things. And that's fine. But she never insulted Islam/Muslims. Never. NEVER. Jean-Luc Mélenchon knows that.

He posts a message on social media calling her a "Fanatic" insulting Islam. He posts this right in the beginning of the Gaza crisis. While a lot of people, especially in the muslim community, were shocked and emotional.

By publically accusing a Jewish figure of disrespecting Muslims, he can appear as "the defender" of humiliated muslims. He gains many votes.

Right after his tweet, El Krief received thousands of messages threatening to rape her and cut her throat. She now lives under police protection:

This man knows exactly what he is doing.

James Talarico is A LOT more likely to win a Senate seat in Texas than Jasmine Crockett. She has basically no chance.

I'm not even american and I know that.

Americans expect a lot from their Presidents. But the real problem is Congress.

  • In the US, you need a super-majority in the Senate to pass any legislation.

  • The Senate size is small. Combined with the super-majority requirement, it means that a single individual Senator has huge power. That create incentives for corruption.

Joe Biden tried to increase taxes on Wall Street. One single Senator, Kyrsten Sinema, sabotaged him.

Biden supported a provision in the Inflation Reduction Act to to bring down drug prices. Again. one single Senator was enough to weaken his reform.
