How about they make the smart TV disappear?

Power generation from burning coal, oil and gas fell 17% in the first six months of 2024 compared with the same period the year before

I find it odd that those numbers dropped considering Germany closed their reactors in favor or gas and coal in 2023.

the ridiculously detailed

An encyclopedia calling an article ridiculously detailed is... interesting.

Manufacturers should have to provide enough specs that third parties can write code that runs on the hardware.

"But Crowdstrike" would probably be an argument against.

New cars aren’t just about the latest infotainment, gadgets, and design.

They mostly are, companies don't care to innovate anymore, only to sell.

There have been huge improvements in pollution control and safety.

Safety? Some, sure. Pollution? The only reason governments regulate is because car companies want to sell you a new car every year. Ooops, big bad government whom we happen to have in our pocket wants Euro5 now...

..even if they’re masked by the increased weight of safety improvements, increased performance, and generally much larger size.

More weight/size = more raw materials, is it really that good for the environment?

If companies and governments are so keep on being green (they're not) they'd ensure cars are easily repairable and upgradable. And they'd keep supporting older models - design a more efficient engine to replace the one in the older car why won't they?

Crash-detection systems can use cellular to alert medical authorities, that and theft are about the only practical use cases i see for that.

These are real time control systems which are quite different to an interrupt based operating system such as Linux.

You do know you can operate the linux kernel in real time, right?

XMPP was doing great until Google and Meta EEE'd it, but it's still alive and well.

When NGINX showed up it beat the then dominant apache on resource utilzation hands-down.

It's also very configurable and has a lot of modules, both in-house and third party.

The only downside for me: as of late the whole commercial part of the project has been gobbling up everything to shove the non-free version to the point where it's hard to find info on the free version, e.g., the wiki page that lists all the third-party modules. The nginxtutorials site seems to be a good resource.

Btw one of the main devs forked it into freenginx:

Dounin writes in his announcement that "new non-technical management" at F5 "recently decided that they know better how to run open source projects. In particular, they decided to interfere with security policy nginx uses for years, ignoring both the policy and developers' position." While it was "quite understandable," given their ownership, Dounin wrote that it means he was "no longer able to control which changes are made in nginx," hence his departure and fork.

Also, fun fact: this is probably the only instance of russian software muricans don't cry Commie! all the time (maybe because the parent company was acquired).

Calling "missing bolts" on a aircraft an "ordinary failure" is the understatement of the year.
