A little joke by the New Zealand based gaming studio Ninja Kiwi.

  • The game is called Bloon Tower Defense 6.
  • The flags don't have game play impact it is just cosmetic / decoration.
  • The money to buy the flags can be earned by playing. No real life money involved.

Haha is this a play on the stereotype of software being super expensive in Australia? Or just a more general ribbing?

It was more a ribbing thing. But there is no offical statement from the devs though.

Afaik software isn't any more expensive in aus? We do pirate it more tho. Ninjakiwi (the devs) are probably just "ribbing" (is ribbing common in nz? I've never heard it before.)

I seem to remember memes from years back showing various software with a 50%+ higher cost in AUD than buying in the US when converting AUD to USD. That was a long time ago, though.

I think when used in context, most NZ born and raised would know what I meant by "ribbing". Not sure if it's that common anymore, though. It is in the dictionary, so I can be sure I didn't make it up.

I just checked the prices for Bloons, looks like it costs 20% less in nz and only costs more than aus in 7 regions, so it seems to be true (unless this is more ribbing lol)

I seem to recall some 20 years ago when digital delivery of software was still young, you would see things like buying Photoshop would cost 50% more if you were in Australia. I think it was because they were trying to keep in line with physical sales which were more expensive (probably because of somewhat reasonable reasons, like the smaller market, distance to ship, stronger consumer rights laws, sales tax, etc). These days it seems digital sales have taken over and regional prices aren't as bad for Australia anymore.

Here I thought you were calling the Monkey Village Banana Flag the Australian flag... Now that would've been gold

I don't want to be the person that declares a war to Australia.
