One of the prime examples for the reason why the extended versions are supreme. This scene adds so much more tragedy to Boromir's eventual fall and redemption.

Agreed! And rewatching the first movie after seeing him in the (extended) scenes from the following episodes sheds such a different light on him.

Him wanting to take the ring makes so much sense when you see what he saw, the battles he fought and how desperate Gondor was at that time in the war. He fell to the ring's allure because he was such a gentle man, that he thought the ring could be used to help others.

And you see that again in so many seemingly unassuming scenes as well, such as when, during the trip to Moria, he is the one sparring with the hobbits to teach them how to fight. And when he eventually dies, the first thing he says to Aragorn is "they took the little ones". He always fought to protect the weak, 'till the very end.

Boromir is my favourite character in the entire trilogy and Sean Bean made God work to depict him. If they remade the trilogy today, with ten times the budget and the manpower, even with Jackson again at the helm, it would still be impossible to make it happen again. It truly was lightning in a bottle.
