Nuclear fusion is becoming a reality with recent runs increasingly outputting more energy than input. It's not a scientific discovery, but it is a great technological advance.
I don't know what beats unlimited green energy, so that's my top one.
Modern fusion research is definitely neat. Any idea what the Q value was for that last JET test? The article didn't say.

Probably was the reasoning behind the most fun question serial that was touched upon by the Q&A community before, you know, the initiator was banned from it for verifiably untrue reasons and had to pass the torch. Yeah, we recorded it using its species' greeting system and it went out of its way to come to the researchers to say hi.
