Summary

Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that U.S. officials plan to implement a "global tariff" on April 2, affecting all trading partners.

Following meetings with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Ford stated Canada must focus on securing exemptions. Ford temporarily suspended his threatened 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S., which facilitated the Washington meeting.

While Ford believes U.S. tariffs will hurt both countries, he expressed hope for Canada to achieve "tier one" supplier status through continued diplomacy.

Ford noted that U.S. rhetoric has "toned down" since the meeting, but retaliation remains an option if new tariffs proceed.
