PeerTube is a decentralized and federated alternative to YouTube. The goal of PeerTube is not to replace YouTube but to offer a viable alternative using the strength of ActivityPub and P2P protocols.

Being built on ActivityPub means PeerTube is able to be part of a bigger social network, the Fediverse (the Federated Universe). On the other hand, P2P technologies help PeerTube to solve the issue of money, inbound with all streaming platform: With PeerTube, you don't need to have a lot of bandwidth available on your server to host a PeerTube platform because all users (which didn't disable the feature) watching a video on PeerTube will be able to share this same video to other viewers.

If you are curious about PeerTube, I can't recommend you enough to check the official website to learn more about the project. If after that you want to try to use PeerTube as a content creator, you can try to find a platform available there to register or host yourself your own PeerTube platform on your own server.

The development of PeerTube is actually sponsored by Framasoft, a french non-for-profit popular educational organization, a group of friends convinced that an emancipating digital world is possible, convinced that it will arise through actual actions on real world and online with and for you!

If you want to contribute to PeerTube, feel free to:

I've tried it out a couple of times in the past but the issue is that all the content I found is either in a language I don't speak or just open source news and how to's. I couldn't find any videos that were of any of my interests. I absolutely love the idea but since youtube has a system for paying people for their content, that is where the best content stays. Afaik.

Just out of curiosity, as a person who doesn't make any videos myself and don't know anyone who does, is there any use to hosting my own peertube instance? Mostly curious because it seems quite popular to self-host so there might be some killer feature I'm overlooking.

Hi!

Self-hosting seems a bit overkill for your situation but having an account somewhere can be helpful for managing your playlist and/or watch history. You can also comment/upvote videos you like with an account.

(Note that on the mobile app, you don't need an account to manage your playlist and watch history)

Right, and picking an instance is kinda same guidelines as any fediverse. Find something focused on your main interest of decent size and you'll be able to get things from most other places too?

Yeah!

What you should check if you want your account to be available from most platforms (instances) is that the platform you want to register on is listed on https://instances.joinpeertube.org/instances

Any platform found through JoinPeerTube website or Sepia Search is from this list.

I suggest taking a look at the pinned post at !peertube@lemmy.wtf about choosing a platform to register on.
