A meme for that weird cross section of LOTR and auto mechanics. Beautiful.

10mm socket, commonly known by mechanics to be the single most lost tool on the planet. Most cars use them a lot, but they're always nowhere to be found

[–] Cyclist@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

I've been wondering why I've been having issues with missing 10mm's lately.

[–] bitcrafter@programming.dev 7 points 11 months ago

Clarification: it is actually The Ten MM Socket.

(In Middle Earth they do not exactly have machine shops, so they were only able to make one of them.)

[–] BestBouclettes@jlai.lu 29 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's the One Ring crafted in secret by Sauron, a corrupted Maiar. The One Ring to rule them all, the One Ring to find them; the One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness, bind them.

[–] bitcrafter@programming.dev 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Oh, so the picture is showing that One Ring! Makes sense now.

10mm socket

famously know by all mechanics to dissapear

mostly its just a common size, and since its used often, its odds of dissapeaing are high

That a 10mm nut, that always get lost and youll never find again

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)
[–] Feddinat0r@feddit.org 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Thanks, in german it is "nuss" therefore nut :)

If i hear socket i think of lights like E14 and E27 socket

[–] simplejack@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

Yeah, in english the nut is the threaded fastener.

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 6 points 11 months ago

It took Sauron 3000 years and he still never found the ring

[–] undefinedValue@programming.dev 7 points 11 months ago

No idea but it must make OP chuckle

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

It is a zip tie, frequently used to attach two things although in most cases it is pulled tightly and this is a rare case of it being used as a simple loop.

[–] besmtt@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago (1 children)

How would losing the ring save middle earth? Sauron would have won if the ring wasn't destroyed.

[–] foo@feddit.uk 17 points 11 months ago

No, but what they're saying is ... Well, it's funny because... Just shut up! Coming around here with all your LOGIC! Ruining our jokes.

[–] Longpork3@lemmy.nz 19 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Has anyone stopped to consider that we may have the causality backwards here?

We know that frodo becomes invisible when wearing the ring, perhaps the reason we can never find the 10mm is that this was already done?

I also wonder if we're approaching this the right way. The Ring hast strange powers and works in subtle ways to get to its chosed ringbearer.

Maybe this is the trick to never lose your 10mm again. At least not for very long.

[–] Bentheredonethat@discuss.online 19 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Pretty esoteric for everyone outside the 10mm socket using world

[–] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

So for everyone ever?

I think you meant to write "10mm socket searching world" ;)

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 1 points 11 months ago

Got me in the first half.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Am I missing something about the zip tie shown here? Those things are pretty easy to cut open, easily defeating this lock or w/e.

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago (2 children)

It's not about locking it.

Mechanics will always misplace a 10mm socket head so the joke is attach the ring to the socket and now the ring will never be found.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Oh I guess I misread the other comments, I assumed they were talking about a wrench or something to use on the socket rather than the socket thing itself

[–] LeninsOvaries@lemmy.cafe 3 points 11 months ago

But Sauron doesn't need to have the ring to draw power from it. Even without knowing where the ring is, he'll conquer Middle Earth unless it's destroyed.

[–] fuck_you_spez@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

I dont do tools, or work on cars or anything, but I literally just bought a $20 rachet set with like 50+ pieces, and the one time I use it on my car to remove the battery, I lose the 10mm... I didn't realize this was so common. I must have spent like an hour in the parking lot looking for it and felt a fool for losing it. This isn't so much humorous as it is vindication! I am not a fool! Or atleast, we all are.

[–] DaCrazyJamez@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 months ago

I recently bought a 12 pack of 10mm socket heads. I can't find it...

[–] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I think the image of the 10mm is supposed to go behind the ring. Otherwise the zip tie creates an impossible perspective, I think.

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 11 months ago

Yes, but there be magic.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 11 months ago

Just because you lost your ratchet head doesn't mean that someone else doesn't find it. Like, Gollum's buddy found a 10mm ratchet just splashing around in a river.

[–] angrystego@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago

A single sock would work as well.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Gollum chewed off the zip tie.
