No, usually they're fine, if you get a reliable brand. I mean they're all a bit flaky, but they shouldn't be acting like that.

I've had the most issues with adapters which use ASMedia chips but they're so ubiquitous in these devices they're impossible to avoid. Try googling the ASMedia chip model number to see if people report issues before buying if it's data you care about.
Could also be a bad USB cable. Heating issues. Electrical interface, etc.
