that is a very sudden increase, what happened then?

I mean this whole chart is 3 months, that big increase is under a week

Death of third-party Reddit apps due to exorbitantly increased prices for API usage.

That's why I'm here! And I've never looked back 😁

The fallout afterwards and the insane fascist backlash from the overlord is what drove me here. Also never looked back as far as daily use goes, but sadly searches and specific niche cases (SFW, lol) still bring me there occasionally.

the reddit blackout protests over api usage fees.

I'm thinking reddit is cracking down more of speech. Heavier moderation can lead to something like this.

i wonder what things will be like if lemmy ever gets large enough to warrant attention from vulture funds and the american gov't

The admins are principled Marxists so they wouldn't sell out or concede without a fight.

Even if we sold out, at most they could get control over lemmy.ml and the git repository. Other instances are under no obligation to upgrade to new Lemmy versions, and could switch to a forked project if needed. The vast majority of Lemmy isnt under our control at all (which is the major difference compared to Reddit).

that's only true for the minority of instances on the lemmverse and the american government likes to use "bread and stick" tactics to force people to do things.

Which will only matter if those instances are hosted in the US, which a lot aren't.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you say that as if the american gov't doesn't have a reach outside this country...

At the moment, apart from Russia, you might've noticed the US is going through a bit of a sticky phase with its once-friends.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

i'm convinced it's temporary.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 1 points 1 year ago

Well, not to the US at least.
