It is a cloudfare site saying that the connection issue is at lemmy.nz
Lemmy.nz Support
You can ask questions about the Lemmy.nz instance here.
This community also serves as our Meta community, with posts about updates to the Lemmy software on Lemmy.nz or other things relevant to Lemmy.nz users and not relevant to other instances.
At about 11am this morning, the host had an outage of maybe 5-10 mins. That would have been not long before you posted this post.
Are you still seeing issues or was it only at that time?
Second time I've seen it this year.
But didn't last to long
The cloudflare message happens when the server can't be reached. This can be for many reasons, but generally it's when it can't be reached at all (as opposed to just being slow).
Other than today, I can think of a time in January where I was updating Lemmy to a new version, that was for about 10 mins.
There might be other brief periods where the host has issues with the server or other issues on the rack.
We also have a bit of downtime coming up next week when the hardware gets upgraded, but I'll do a post with more info once I know more.
Clearly I'm on Lemmy too much
Haha just the right amount!
Lemmy is far, far more stable than it was when the instance launched 18 months back, but it's still not perfect (or even good). It's not uncommon for me to find the UI hanging while trying to load posts, but it normally only lasts a few seconds.
I've seen other admins complaining recently and some things to try offered so I have it on my lists to make some changes and see if I see an improvement.
Sometimes the UI hangs for me and I can't do anything but it might be partly the old tech I'm using to access it.
Nah, it happens for me too. It doesn't seem to happen (as much) using alternate frontends or apps, so I think it's the actual front end that is freezing (on the server side) rather than the lemmy backend.
I have some tweaks to try and some instances are running multiple UI containers which I might try as well, just need a chance to test it all first before doing it on the live one, and there's also a minor lemmy version to upgrade to as well. So many jobs 😆
Good to know about the alternative frontends.
So many jobs
I don't know how you do it, but I'm glad you do. 💛
Thanks for the support! One thing wouldn't be so bad but I have another dozen I run on a home server, and I've been making some big changes so trying to tidy up that first (especially so I can free up the space for cloning Lemmy's 300GB+ of data to do a test run). I'd hoping that work will be complete soon so I can create the lemmy test instance and try out some changes plus test the lemmy upgrade.
Just had the freeze problem and the alternative back end works fine. So, thanks for the tip!
I'm going to try to work out the setup running multiple front end Lemmy containers because it's super annoying when it freezes up. People shouldn't have to switch frontends just to use Lemmy!
Silver lining is I like this front end better (The old.lemmy one).
Oh nice! Yeah that can be pretty nostalgic.
Unfortunately I always get stuck with mod/admin activities on the alternative frontends so end up back on the default one.
Fingers crossed that one day a lemmy mod/admin will write a client for you.
I really like info-dense screens.
Things have come a long way in the 18 months+ since I started this instance. The default UI may freeze occasionally but back at the beginning there was a cron job to restart it each night so it didn't run out of RAM (IIRC, Lemmy.world had to restart every 30 mins). It has come a long way.
Plus now there are tools like the one to check federation is working, the automod, the batching tool that helps us keep up to date with the Lemmy.world flood of federation, and more.
If you like data, you could check out: https://grafana.lem.rocks/d/bdid38k9p0t1cf/federation-health-single-instance-overview?orgId=1&var-instance=lemmy.world&var-remote_instance=lemmy.nz
You can play with the settings, that's set to Lemmy.world to Lemmy.nz federation. Or visit https://grafana.lem.rocks/ to see the different dashboards.
Edit: I'm wondering now if you meant the compacted post view of old.lemmy.nz but hey now you have some info screens of federation data 😀
Yeah I did just mean the compacted view but those grafana pages are fascinating so it worked out well for me.😃 Thanks!
We are so lucky to have the fediverse. I'm still blown away by how much better it is than overtly commercial algorithm-driven web 2.0 stuff.
Yeah I find it painful to use other sites without ad blockers. Often with ad blockers it's still hard. The feed is often half ads or content you aren't following. It's quite refreshing to have a feed that is what it says it is.
Totally. I always have an ad blocker but even that isn't enough to save you from random content on many sites. Had to go on fb recently and was shocked by how bad it is now. Even youtube with blockers keeps pushing really weird recommendations. The fediverse is more like how the internet was before corporates took over.
I still have a facebook account for family reasons but I never use it except for answering messages. When I did, there was an extension F.B. Purity that would take care of the ads as well as being a bit of a RES for facebook. You could edit settings to only show certain things in your feed, and other cool settings. But facebook in general is not something I want to be near these days.
I have one for reasons (contacts) but I don't like it either... I wonder if FB Purity still works?
It's not just the GUI or the algorithms though. It's also all the hate speech and genocide.
The last update was less than a month ago so I'd guess it works: https://www.fbpurity.com/
You can remove all the posts from your feed that aren't from your friends. I remember getting a bit lost in all the settings though.
If your friends are the ones with the hate speech and genocide, then... I guess you can block keywords? Or just un-friend them.
Oh interesting. Thanks heaps, I will definitely be adding that!
If your friends are the ones with the hate speech and genocide
Thanks this made me giggle uncontrollably for a moment there!
No I just mean using fb kind of makes my skin crawl on a moral level, because of its long-term willingness to aid in genocidal killings for years on end and its role in fomenting hate more generally.
Edit: Amnesty International report from a few years ago in case you're wondering what I'm on about.
Ah yes I almost forgot about all the facebook stuff. Have you read Mindf*ck? The one about Cambridge Analytica not the romance novel that comes up when you search for it. While not directly implicating facebook, they are at least complicit in some pretty horrible stuff (and that was 10+ years ago). It's one side of the story from a whistleblower but it's a pretty crazy story.
I haven't posted on facebook in a long time (I can't remember posting anything after they got rid of "walls"), there's an awful lot not to like about facebook, but there isn't a replacement. There's Friendica, sure, but that is not in any way ready to replace facebook, and I have pretty simple criteria (posts are private, handles video and photo uploads well. That's pretty much my whole list).
I have not read that, sounds interesting! I remember reading an interview with one of the Cambridge Analytica whistleblowers who said they had been deliberately testing messaging on dissaffected young men and came up with "drain the swamp" etc long before Trump's candidacy though.
Meta are directly implicated in the Myanmar genocide. The higher ups there were aware that it was being used to deliver specific genocide instructions for over two years and refused to shut that down, then later during the genocide prosecution they actively impeded the courts.
The book covers that pre-Trump stuff. From memory it was something like Obama got elected using a form of microtargeting and Republicans realised they were way behind on using big data. So the early parts were almost 8 years before Trump was elected. I think the company (not yet called Cambridge Analytica) was involved in dodgy stuff in developing countries ahead of that as well.
That does sound interesting. I'm really behind on reading about all that big picture stuff. There's a book called Surveillance Capitalism I keep meaning to read to help me make sense of what is going on.
Lately I get the impression that "Republicans" and "Democrats" aren't really the driving forces behind any of this - it's oligarchs or something.
Problem is my brain rebels against non fiction lately and would much rather read a sci fi about evolved spiders exploring space!
Tell me more about these spiders exploring space? Presuming we aren't talking Ender's Game.
Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. The premise is that jumping spiders evolve into a complex civilization.
It cuts between humans and jumping spiders - the humans keep going into hypersleep so it's the same humans, but the jumping spider side is like an epic and covers many centuries.
Have now finished it, it was really good in a light-hearted way.
I've always been fond of irl jumping spiders so imagining it is super cute.
Ah I've heard of that but haven't read it. I'll put it on my list, thanks!
Edit: it was already on my list 😅. But has a 9 week wait on Libby.
That's hilarious!
9 weeks ay. You'll just have to go into a cryochamber to wait for it.
Haha I could try, but I haven't learnt how to make one yet! I presume this will be covered in the instructions in the book.
It's very soft scifi unfortunately. Think The Sparrow not The Martian.
Otoh it does sort of tell you a fair bit about how to build webs. 😃
Haha soft scifi is good. I'll wait my 9 weeks and see how it goes.
Cool, let me know!
I'll probably read the rest of the trilogy but apparently there's a drop in quality.
Will do! Warning, it can take me a long time to read a novel. Months. After spending all evening reading kids books it can be hard to get into a book for adults with the little remaining evening time. But I'll try to remember to let you know what I thought!
