Except virtually nobody defederates from lemmy.ml, and many Hexbear alts are already there.

and many Hexbear alts are already there.

Maybe that's a good thing, all those ".ml isn't that bad they seem nice" people about to see .ml for what it really is lol

.ml isn't great but it's nothing compared to Hexbear. If the hexbears lose their madhouse and start disseminating to other tankie instances, it's gonna make them ten times worse.

It's no longer an if IMO, they lost it. It's auction is already at $305 up from $12 and it just opened, it's a 10 day auction. Once the crypto bros catch wind it's game over.

How did this happen? Turned off auto renewal?

Word on the Lemmy-verse is that the admin in charge of the infrastructure went MIA and someone was waiting to snatch it as soon as it expired and threw it up for auction

So looks like for instance to be viable it has to be federated?

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

That, and you kinda have to pay for the site.

I'm confused, I've seen hexbears posting within the last week, but the domain apparently expired almost a month ago?

[–] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Its possible it was in the grace period, which is a designated time between non payment before a domain goes up for sale for the owner to true up and retain it.

It also possible the new owner (maybe the domain name service?) kept the dns address the same to resolve to the hexbear server. It would keep working, but the owner can break it at any time.

I guess I don't understand how lemmy works. I see them continuing to post. How, if they can't log into their instance?

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Registrar grace period, caches and/or federation delays. It's not unheard of for instances to take days to "catch-up" on federation with some instances.

[–] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 year ago

You won't have to see them post if you move to an instance that blocks them

How are all those kids alts going to reply to comments without thier sticker book?
