Emergency quarantine protocols are in place in Irkutsk after a suspected laboratory accident

Russian health authorities have reportedly placed hundreds of people in quarantine in Siberia following the death of a laboratory worker who was exposed to an “unknown” virus.

The 28-year-old victim was an employee at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, a town near the regional capital of Irkutsk, according to reports.

Prior to her death, she reportedly told medical personnel that she had accidentally broken a test tube containing live biological samples while working inside the facility.

T-Virus time?

I look forward to conservatives fighting for their right to get bitten by zombies.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 3 points 40 minutes ago

Sure. Let’s do this.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 1 points 12 minutes ago

Time for some YEBID-26?

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 67 points 3 hours ago (4 children)

Hopefully it's contained, because if we get another pandemic conservatives are going to do everything in their power to make it kill as many people as possible.

[–] j_elgato@leminal.space 1 points 4 minutes ago

I mean... Aren't the conservatives going to do that anyway?

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 22 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

They'll mostly be successful in killing their own voter base, which would ultimately turn out positively?

[–] tal@lemmy.today 18 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I think that it'd be pretty hard to describe a plague pandemic in any terms approaching "positively".

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 15 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

IDK an irradication of boomers, antivaxers, and conservatives would be approaching a positive outcome.

[–] searabbit@piefed.social 3 points 33 minutes ago

So just fuck the disabled and immunocompromised?

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago

It's like eradication but also irradiation for some reason.

[–] gashead76@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I’d like to know what the “live biological samples” were.

[–] historicaldocuments@lemmy.world 11 points 2 hours ago

Earlier articles said it was Pneumonic Plague. Maybe the independent is taking a step back from that since there's nothing definitive, but it doesn't really matter right now (note that this position is different from saying it doesn't matter at all, or saying to not keep your ear to the ground).

If it's the plague then it's treatable with antibiotics, but not the first line ones, and it has to be treated quickly. As we all should know by now if it's a virus you can only treat the symptoms until there's a vaccine.

I'm hoping there is one, simply because the same thing will happen again.

The Left will follow instructions and survive, the Right will die in numbers large enough to affect elections

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Ooo we haven’t had a pandemic in 6.5 years.

We have dozens of ongoing pandemics. We haven't had a new and notable pandemic in 6.5 years. Just the same flus and colds and uhhh measles? And whooping cough and-

[–] running_ragged@lemmy.world 1 points 14 minutes ago

Those are all endemic at this point.

Pandemic is characterized by fast, unpredictable spread across many international regions.

Anti-Plague Research Institute

I bet I know what this mystery virus is

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 4 points 52 minutes ago (1 children)

It’s like bills with titles that say the opposite of what they achieve.

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 1 points 36 minutes ago

Should be Pro-Plague Research Institute

NGL the news about this one is stressing me the fuck out for some reason. Maybe because its Russia and it came from a lab, so I'm immediately dooming this is like an antibiotic superweapon or some shit. I don't know, that's just needless anxiety right?

But also I can't trust the US government to take care of people and I can't trust the Russian government to tell the truth about this so I feel like shit is gonna hit the fan.

[–] Pratai@piefed.ca 3 points 1 hour ago

Welp… here it comes.

[–] Blade9732@lemmy.world 6 points 1 hour ago

Everybody get ready to add a "Russian Plague" box to your bingo card.

[–] systemedmond@literature.cafe 23 points 3 hours ago

Aw shit, here we go again…

[–] Zensate@lemmy.world 13 points 2 hours ago

So if Putin calls it the Anti-Plague Research Institute we can be pretty sure they're actively creating plagues right?

[–] Zephorah@discuss.online 16 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Wow. What’s Putin doing, manufacturing plague to deal with Ukraine?

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 17 points 2 hours ago

Always has been.

The USSR from the Stalin era onwards had world-leading biological and chemical weapons programmes, largely due to having plenty of test subjects in the gulag system.

[–] apprehensivecrab1@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Please not again

[–] itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

I gotta say the moment the RUSSIANS start taking things like this seriously is usually quite late. So uuuuuuuh
