Video Game Suggestions

568 readers
1 users here now

A place to find suggestions for video games! For example, you might create a post looking for recommendations for a game to play with a friend, or a game that is easy to play if you just broke your dominant hand. Or you might post a list of games that let you use a whip as a weapon. A lot of rules for conduct here are pretty obvious (don't be a jerk, stay on-topic) so I'll bold the weird ones.

Rules

  1. Please stay on-topic: post requests for games that match some criteria you specify, lists of games with a certain element, or something otherwise relevant to helping people find games that match certain criteria.
    • If you're looking to find the name of a particular game or video game series you forgot, you should go to !TipOfMyJoystick@retrolemmy.com. This community is for fielding or giving suggestions for video games, not for identifying one specific video game.
    • If you're making a post that is suggesting games, it should be a list of games. This is partially to help prevent the community from being overrun by people just suggesting their favorite game, and devs suggesting you play their latest game. This is about posts, not comments. It's okay to comment on a post asking for gaming suggestions with just one game.
  2. Don’t be a jerk. This covers bigotry and discrimination, which includes but is not limited to homophobia, racism, sexism, etc.
  3. Please don’t directly link to pirated content.
  4. When advertising something you have worked on, please use common sense for what is spammy. Self-promotion isn't totally banned: if someone asked for an RPG where you can play a lich, and the game you worked on is an RPG where you can play a lich, you can definitely answer with your RPG. I reserve the right to change this rule to be more specific about what exactly counts as spammy and what does not, but I feel I’ll know it when I see it and trust most posters to operate in good faith.
  5. Please indicate spoilers when necessary. The following format works on both Lemmy and Kbin, but if you are using an app it may not. See this comment for which apps handle spoilers. Note that spoilers in post bodies will just show the text in the preview if you link the post in, say, Discord, instead of spoiling it.
Spoilers for SomeGameSomething that happened at the end of the game! Something else that happened at the end of the game!

Magazine/community icon is the Apple video game emoji and green checkmark emoji for now. Suggestions for a replacement are very welcome.

Hey so I've been getting a bit into videogame versions of pinball. Whether it be just normal pinball or games that use pinball mechanics to do other things. Like I had a ton of fun with Yoku's Island Express. Played through the campaign of Sonic Pinball Party and thought it was ok. I've been recommended Pinball FX and Midnight Magic before. Just curious what else is out there worth playing.

The original version is part of Full Tilt! Pinball from 1995. It’s readily available on places like the internet archive!

That's where I got this one. It doesn't feel right, like the physics are off

A YouTuber is building a real version of Space Cadet

I saw that while looking for this one! Very based

In my opinion, there are two teams making amazing pinball games at the moment.

Zen Studios:

WIZNWAR & FLARB

Cult of PiN looks neat if you’re into Balatro-style mechanics in your pinball.

I really like Pinball Arcade for my own use - i especially love the Theatre of Magic, but they have adapted pretty predatory business tactics and lost the Williams and Bally licences. Shoot me a message if you want a nice link with all 113 tables which skips the bullshit (ca 5 GB download size)

Damn, Yoku's Island Express would have been my recommendation.

Vector Pinball (Play Store link ) is a decent time waster on mobile.

I keep Vector Pinball on my Android phone for when the urge strikes. It's open source, available from F-Droid, and gets a new table added roughly once a year.

When a was young, I loved Pinball Construction Set on my Commodore 64. It let you build your own layout (admittedly tedious with a joystick - I don't think a mouse existed for the C64 at release), and make a standalone playable file out of it. I've seen hundreds built by others available for download. I've not seriously gone looking, but always been surprised not to see an updated version since. It was available on multiple computers at the time, so you can use your preferred version and emulator (including 8-bit Wonders on F-Droid, which makes it relatively easy to download & play Commodore 8-bit computer games from archive.org). ETA: I don't think the creations were cross-platform compatible, tho, so if you get into this you may wind up getting multiple versions & emulators.

I play a lot of Pinball Deluxe Reloaded on android. Lots of different tables and you can get modifiers to make each table play slightly differently to suit your playstyle. Extra tables have a cost, but not expensive and the modifiers can be obtained using tickets you get by playing.

There's also daily events with leaderboards which are fun.

I've never played it so I can't vouch for its quality, but there's Metroid Prime Pinball.
