Is gambling even illegal in the USA, though? I always heard it was except for Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and indigenous peoples’ land.
Then I heard states can set up lotteries and do other scratch card gambling.
Then American football started leaving real hard into sports betting.
What even is gambling law over there?
Gambling laws are state by state. Some allow it everywhere. A bunch of states passed laws in the last several years to allow those sports being apps (after considerable lobbying from monied interests) which is why it's suddenly everywhere.
Nevada, ironically, does not allow those gambling apps, because it would compete with Vegas.
A few states you'll see slot machines in every restaurant and gas station. Others, it's only allowed on River boats, or native American reservations (because they're technically sovereign). Some only allow the fantasy draft variety of apps because there's a small amount of skill involved, instead of pure luck.
It's a mess.
It's a ~~mess~~gamble.
See Polymarket said that they weren't gambling and then didn't adhere to the laws and pay the taxes required for gambling companies. But they are a gambling company. And now they're being sued because they were running an illegal gambling operation.
