People used to do this, and they still do, too.

Do what? Write with cheap but decent fountain pens?

Yeah... the only difference that I see here is the price, compare to something like a platinum preppy... with that you only get the installed cart with the pen.

[–] Bgugi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Adjusting for inflation, that $1 is closer to $11. A preppy and half a ten pack of platinum black carts would be around $13.50 at US pen retailers, so not too bad overall.

That said, these are a small quantity novelty import. JDM you can get the preppy and a full ten pack for 900 JPY, or about $6.

Fountain pens are expressive and the efillable options are nicer for the planet.

[–] punkcoder@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I will agree that they are better for the planet, but I wouldn’t say that they are expensive, but they are more expensive than a ball point in most cases, becuase they are refillable. Platnium Preppy is a good example and can be had for usually less than $5. For nicer models that wont break you look at jinhao or hongdian with some of them being between $10-$30. The black forrest is particularly nice.

fair if you decide to take up the hobby, spend a lot of time with pens and , and talking with random people (info dumping… sorry) about fountain pens.

I used "expressive". I think the nib forces me to consider what I'm putting on the page.

[–] punkcoder@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

lol yes you did, and yes it does.

Is there still that one girl that collect the small balls from cartridge so when your cartridge were empty you just gave it to here and she was super happy to actually collect you trash ?

[–] slowmolaggins@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Who is out there able to use and keep track of their pens long enough to make use of refill cartridges?

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 2 points 1 week ago

I use pens a lot at work. I stopped using disposables a couple of years ago and switched to fountain pen (although it's a rollerball fountain pen). I've for an extra capacity cartridge that runs out in one week of work is heavy (although this is used a lot less now with more digitisation). But I just keep an ink pot and refill the same cartridge.

Yeah, it was compulsory in France at school, everyone had one, plus an "ink eraser" pen. And we all wrote in cursive, I don't know how to write in another manner.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

They no longer teach cursive in America. My son graduated in 2017, and he didn't learn cursive.

Now I'm starting to see Insta posts of young people trying to read an easy phrase in cursive, and they can't do it. Frankly, from what I've seen, part of the problem is cursive, but at least part of the problem is that many of these young people just can't read at all, which is an entirely different problem.

These were the modern version of Fountain Pens, which used a watery ink in those little cartridges. I was in elementary school in the 60s, and when you got to 3rd grade, it was time to learn to write Cursive, and ball point pens were prohibited, for some reason. We were required to use these types of Fountain Pens,.probably because it was traditional, and some ancient old school curriculum writer couldn't let go. In 4th grade, we could use ball points, but for learning, it had to be Fountain Pens.

It took a minute for the ink to dry. In the olden days, people would keep a big curved thing on their desk with a pad on the curved side, and a knob on the flat side. When they'd sign something, they'd roll the pad over the signature, and sop up the excess wet ink, drying it instantly.

My problem was that I was left handed, so as I wrote, I would drag the side of my palm across the wet ink. The side of my palm was always black from pencil graphite anyway, and now I was adding blue ink to it as well, along with smearing ink across the page. I hated fountain pens, and switched to ball points as soon as I could.

I also hated cursive. By 6th grade, I was writing everything in capital letters, with small caps for lower case. I write that way to this day, many decades later.

it may also be helpful if you’re not a fountain pen, user, fountain pens go through significantly more ink than a ballpoint pen because the makeup of the ink.

And some still do.
