I mean, originally, Pepe just really liked to take his pants all the way down to take a piss.

https://knowyourmeme.com/sensitive/memes/feels-good-man

This is the literal original Pepe.

... feels good man.

[–] RaphaelSchmitz@feddit.org 87 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pissing. It started with a comic where the frog learns to piss, AFAIK.

[–] kungen@feddit.nu 70 points 3 days ago (2 children)

He got caught pissing with his pants all the way down, because it "feels good man".

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 28 points 3 days ago

This resonated strongly with the alt-right.

We should take all things that fascists use to identify eachother and reclaim for good. Do not allow fascists to claim cultural ground or identify each other. Leave them with nothing.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 14 points 3 days ago

Leave them with nothing.

scorched earth!

The swatiska is a very cool looking symbol, and it being unusable for decades is a crime against design.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Nazi's only really used one style of swatiska. It's not too hard to differentiate if you don't knee jerk. Any Hindu and Navajo person really only needs to avoid one specific style.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 1 points 46 minutes ago

The dots help a lot. Just rotating it isn't enough.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Can you imagine being these guys as Nazism is talking root in Germany?

Vote Number One to Change the Team Name: No, fuck that! We came first, and those German assholes can't steal our cool symbol!

Vote Number Two, A Little Later: Okay, I think maybe we should go ahead and change the name of the team.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Behind the Bastards did a really good two parter on the history of the Swastika and similarly shaped symbols. It was used a crazy number of time before the Nazis took it.

I think a few of those are different enough you could probably use them, pretty sure I have seen something sweeping similar to the Chinese one before.

[–] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And it should be taken back, it has a beautiful history, and doesn't deserve to be owned by the scum of the earth.

[–] nonfuinoncuro@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

in East Asia it has always been associated with religion and temples, not sure about south Asia where it came from

[–] Clbull@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'd argue in the opposite direction. Can we turn cancerous un-fun heroes in games like Overwatch and League of Legends into Fascist symbols to get them deleted by the devs?

I mean imagine getting Teemo removed from League and 2XKO...

[–] chrislowles@lemmy.zip 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

From comics about pissing with your pants down to alt-right co-opts to reclamation with Hong Kong democracy protests, this little frog has been and seen some shit.

Donald Duck fought WWII and has actual PTSD. We kick the shit out of our cartoons man.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

Pepes are just an advanced version of emoji, they can be used to express almost any idea.

Of course you're going to get some variety.

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 3 days ago (2 children)

As if "Pepe is nazi now" was not more culture war bullshit.

[–] trashgirlfriend@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Pretending the meme wasn't being used in a large part by /pol/ scum is cope

[–] BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Pretending Pepe wasn't a bigger proponent of Twitch culture is cope.

Pepe was just used by all terminally online people.

[–] Shea@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

oh ny god shut up you werent there then. you dont know what hes talking about. there was a solid like decade of that. I know, i was in the proto altright edgy teen to communist tranny pipeline

[–] BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk 4 points 2 days ago

I wasn't on /pol/, that's right. I preferred to watch war videos on live leak without any comments on.

Pepe was bloody everywhere, acting like your corner of the internet was special in that regard is just lacking perspective. Memes spread through internet spaces, terminally online people interact with a slew of other terminally online people. Which then spread any funny or cool idea on to others.

Normie's aka mainstream media just didn't interact with pepe before they started reporting on events happening on /pol/. And coined it a 4chan exclusive, because they didn't care about any other corner online

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

From the original creator of the character.

From Boy’s Club comics to appropriated alt right symbol (WT actual F tho), Pepe has often been misunderstood.

That's why we work with his creator Matt Furie to make the only officially licensed Pepe toy out there. Feels good man.

Proceeds help Matt Furie fight Nazis

[–] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 days ago

Because it's an internet meme, not because it's a nazi symbol. Pretending they owned it in any way is just stupid

[–] nullspace@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They tried to take pepe frogs like they did the OK gesture.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Ooh is that over yet? I loved the OK gesture! It's better than thumbs-up because that can also mean "let's swim upwards" or "sit on my dick" in some contexts.

[–] REDACTED@infosec.pub 29 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It's a meme. I don't think there's canon story to the frog, both good and bad can use it for whatever purpose

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 35 points 3 days ago

I mean, there is a canon story

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pepe definitely became a mascot of the alt-right for a time

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

As far as I recall, the whole declaration that it was a hate symbol was pretty misinformed to begin with.

It was originally used by tons of people online, particularly by quite a lot of 4chan users. So it got mostly used for weird memes like ones about adult man children earning good boy points towards chicken tenders and being socially inept, and sometimes for weird alt-right bullshit.

Then during the horrid mess of GamerGate (which has direct ties to a handful of current rightwing grifters gaining popularity), at one point some rights advocacy group labelled it a hate symbol due to the association with GamerGate by way of 4chan. I mean sure, hateful movement, right? But they were using it like people use stick figures. In my opinion Pepe was more the medium than the message, and it wasn't so overwhelmingly used for hate like twitter/x that you could legitimately make the argument that it hands down was a dog whistle or only used by those who would tolerate the hateful views.

Then again, I was a heavy 4chan user many many years ago (dropped off during the scientology raids), so my point of view is probably skewed.

I get that for a while a lot of the internet stopped using it due to the negative associations and news articles citing the original claim by the advocacy group, but it makes me happy to see the awkward little frog being "reclaimed" for general use again.

[–] prettybunnys@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Disagree, Pepe and Kekistan were intertwined with the alt-right for a hot minute and while it didn’t originate there it lingers.

It’s sick to see it being “taken back” but that doesn’t make my point less valid, it was a mascot for a hot minute.

[–] thallamabond@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

I'm with prettybunnys, I remember these and 100s of ban evasion subs, they were NOT thinly veiled racism/antisemitism it was outright. r/frenworld r/clownworld r/honker r/clownworldwar

[–] BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk 2 points 2 days ago

I honestly think it's a perspective of age, I don't recall ever seeing it being dropped. Despite mostly being active in queer friendly areas of the internet.

But I recon age might have a factor, as everyone has seen Pepe used for all sorts of things before gamergate became a thing. Whilst communities based on younger individuals, might have taken other stances

[–] OakTree@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 days ago

There’s a documentary on Pepe that includes the original artist, if you’re interested in the story. both the fictional canon and real life arc.

NGL I think it was the other way around...

[–] Eldritch@piefed.world 24 points 3 days ago

No, it went all the way around. Full 360.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

Prohibiting symbols always gives them more power.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Hostile take-overs are a bitch

Maybe the bike lanes are nazis too.

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

There was some drama in a discord I was in years ago over it. Not a lot of people knew about its origins and the mod staff in the server banned it from the memes channel without saying anything.

Walkable city: Here's your tiny foot traffic lane. Be sure to watch for skateboards while you leave your lane to go around the columns supporting the train line.

[–] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

at least you have SOMETHING 😭

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Even that is better than driving everywhere.
