Man chose violence after losing his Monaco podium

What the hell did they put on those Alpines?! Competitive in all Qualy sessions and Pole?

Great drive from Pierre, totally unexpected given how many of their competitors were getting a tow

They put on skinny rear wings.

A bit hilarious how everyone else was playing around with towing and slip streaming, carefully planning timings and strategizing (and messing things up)... Meanwhile, Alpine just threw away their rear wings and got pole.

Yeah but they will be in big trouble in the race tho. It's all well and good dropping the drag by flattening the wings. But that means no downforce in the corners. We've seen over 1 lap the laptime is faster, so it's a good way to go right? So why haven't all the teams done this?

Because dropping downforce means the car will be sliding in all the corners. Not only is that harder for the driver to get that laptime every lap (they are F1 drivers, they should be able to do it), but it eats up the tyres. Sliding means overheating and gaining of the surface. In order to save their tyres they are going to have to slow down a lot in the corners, which means those straight gains go away very quickly. And they could easily require an extra pit stop compared to others.

For example somebody like Piastri who is compromised by the penalty going extremely long and stopping one time less might have a better race time and thus position in the end, even though all of his laps are slower than Gasley.

That said, it's still an amazing result by Gasley. Having the wings slimmed down is one thing, actually getting the lap time out of it is another.

Oh, of course they'll be in trouble in the race. I'd assume Gasly will finish somewhere below top 5-7. Though if he gets a blinding start, you never know. Maybe his low downforce, high straight line speed will help him defend. We'll see.

I'm so upset that I turned off F1 today. What an amazing pole by Alpine. Had to rewatch Q3 for this. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I was definitely not expecting an Alpine pole. On the other hand, I'm disappointed by Ferrari and Norris.

Ah Piastri has been having some terrible luck/strategy these past few races. Gonna get a penalty for no good reason.

Hamilton makes it to Q3 by 0.001s damn.

Lindblad is cruising through these qualifying sessions.

[โ€“] hypeerror@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Hamilton going to end up on the 2nd row after Piastri gets a penalty. Not a bad way to salvage the run considering out in Q1 looked like a possibility.

I feel like Alpine have only been noteworthy at two races. Both beginning with "Mon...".
I will be investigating this 'coincidence'.

Where is Alpine getting this pace from in Q1, wow.

Another T1 disaster for McLaren/Piastri jeez.
