Anyone else think gatekeeping the cyberpunk terminology is as hopeless as it is pointless?

What is Cyberpunk?
Cyberpunk is a science-fiction sub-genre dealing with the integration of society and technology in dystopian settings. Often referred to as “low-life and high tech,” Cyberpunk stories deal with outsiders (punks) who fight against the oppressors in society (usually mega corporations that control everything) via technological means (cyber). If the punks aren’t actively fighting against a megacorp, they’re still dealing with living in a world completely dependent on high technology.
Cyberpunk characteristics include:
- Dystopian city setting where mega-corporations rule
- Full integration of technology into society, featuring cybernetic implants
- Outsider protagonists (punks) who often are very familiar with the technology around them
- Hard boiled detective and film noir vibes and influence
- Themes dabbling in trans-humanism, existentialism, and what it means to be human.

Especially if you can manage to run modern Linux on it.
In the linked video the cyberdeck is an Android phone. MacOS 8.5 is perfectly valid.

But you don't understand, if someone else uses terminology specific to MY favorite cyberpunk story incorrectly according to my interpretation of it, it RUINS EVERYTHING! I HAVE to tell them they're wrong, or they'll just CONTINUE BEING HAPPY/CONTENT ABOUT THINGS!
We can at least push toward "high tech low life" instead of generic rainy neon. Less Hong Kong, more Kowloon.
I’m sorry I cant get behind high tech low life. It is a good generalization but it opens the door to too many films/media that I dont think should be considered cyberpunk.
Gatekeeping terminology like cyberdeck is as pointless as arguing about the ethnicity of a mermaid from a folktale.
The irony is that people who think they know the real meaning will have some other expert come around and point out how they're also wrong. Language is fluid and non-prescriptive. Meaning evolves with usage. Literally doesn't literally mean literally anymore in many common uses, however much it might annoy you.
Who gets to define the word - William Gibson fans? The cyberdeck is an 80s keytar with neural trodes to get you into cyberspace. Anyone with a big monitor isn't rocking this "cyberdeck." What about sandbending where the computers are made from ivory and coral and recycled aluminum cans.
Cyberpunk 2020/2077 fans? The cyberdeck is retro-futuristic foldable palm pilot terminal device, but also obsolete once you move on to implants and then the cyberdeck is in your head.
As long as you explain what you mean when you use the term (or better yet, show what you mean), it's cool.
I love that we have women building pink plastic Barbie cyberdecks that will piss off the tacticool corporate scifi hardware purists. Reality is messy and you can't control other people. And acknowledging that makes your cyberpunk literature feel more authentic and makes your real world computing hardware projects more interesting and less cliche.
And it would be even sweeter irony if the hacker who takes down the evil megacorp servers does so with a mass manufactured cheap plastic trademarked commercial brand themed cyberdeck than some retro-futuristic scifi soviet hardshell device designed to survive nuclear fallout.
Page 132 of the Cyberpunk 2020 rulebook. They are just laptops in real life because you dont have an interface jack and the Net doesnt actually have Ihara-Grubb Algorithms to make it 3D.
I really love how building cyberdecks has become more popular in the last few years. Everytime I see a build though it never seems to be quite as good as a small laptop. I know "real" decks have neural interfaces and other scifi tech in them but I feel like cyberdeck builders could add things like SDR or mesh networking to give it a functional reason to exist.
Still a fun idea though.
