I need to stop swearing so much.

If anything studios should take this as a sign that there's an undeserved market and develop a competitor. People have been spending billions on GTA5 despite it being nearly a decade old now, so it's not just the graphics or something only a modern AAA budget could do imo.

You're right it's not the graphics or (explicitly) the budget. The problem is its the brand. And when a large portion of the consumer base is only there because of the brand, it's hard to break through as a competitor.

I don't think that's honestly the case, if anything I dislike the brand but might still end up paying and playing. Can you name a viable alternative that offers similar gameplay?

I can't, and I think that proves my point? (Genuine question mark, not trying to be an asshole) There have certainly been others. Watchdogs at least started out as a gta clone with a matrix paint job, and similarly mafia has a 1900s paint job. Minds eye comes to mind as a recent example but you could certainly argue that product lacked quality. Saints row I actually still enjoy but it was very much a parody of GTA (and itself by the end). But the open city you can drive around in stolen cars is a concept that I feel like I see tons of cheap knock offs anytime I open the store page.

I certainly don't mean to imply everyone is playing simply for the brand. But let me ask you this. If you dislike the brand, what is it about GTA that you do enjoy? (Again genuine question)
