I’m not sure that narrative makes sense. There wasn‘t really a thing it was opposed to in most cases. Not that I‘m aware of. There simply wasn‘t a licensed platform for Anime other than the few shows on less than a hand full TV channels, mostly at night. Early anime fansub sites simply did what anime studios or TV networks didn‘t care to do: Localizing a wide variety of Anime in the first place.
I don't need physical media, a DRM-free download that I can save on my own will do.

I enjoyed it, haven't watched the latest season.
OK, so I watched the first dozen episodes and its not bad. The animation style is a little wonky, the kids do not really look like kids, especially when close up
