Firefox says it will keep supporting uBlock Origin even as Microsoft Edge and other Chromium browsers phase it out under Manifest V3.

Except Firefox and its forks, are there any other browsers that are not chromium based?

It's not ready yet but there's the ladybird project that has a lot of promise. I appreciate FF a lot but their code base is a mess, they need a modern rewrite of their browser engine. That's why we're getting all these chromium based browsers, it's just a better base to build off of.

From their own monthly updates where they compared their progress with other browsers Servo also seemed to be coming along nicely, although for now it seems to be just a browser engine and not an actual browser.

Sooner is better then latter because they're already losing the adoption war. An internet where web developers write their sites for chromium specifically is a bad situation and it's happening slowly. FF needs more adoption and spins who can fit niches they don't. FF spins just haven't been as successful as chromium spins so far. Like waterfox vs brave.

First IronFox, then LibreWolf and now ladybird.. a definitive alternative to FF for at least 5 years would be nice..

I'm not saying taking gecko and modifying it is impossible, just far less pleasant than taking blink/V8. Ladybird is interesting because it's a completely independent project from chromium or FF with some really nice ideas. I hope to see it succeed but seems to be moving a little too slowly as a project to be a serious contender. That's all to say it's far easier to make chromium based browsers than FF based browsers. FF has needed a rewrite for like a decade already.

Alternate headline: Firefox is now the only browser worth using.

And in any case, lumping Firefox as one browser is disingenuous. There are numerous Firefox forks, just like every other major browser is in fact a Google Chromium fork.

If it goes... I don't know what I'll do.

Go out and touch grass probably.

Get a hobby.

Perfect my molotov recipe.

air/land/sea drones for ordnance delivery

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Yes, and "ordnance"! "Ordinance" is like a municipal law, "ordnance" is explosives. Not trying to be pedantic, trying to inform. Slava Ukraini, by the way. <3

I can't imagine using the web without firefox and ublock. Even the cookie consent popups are awful.

Since there are only two major browsers... one of which admittedly wears many disguises.

Happy with Librewolf. I can't imagine using my browser everyday if I don't have a good adblocker on it like uBO.

[–] gratux@lemmy.blahaj.zone 293 points 3 days ago (6 children)

If they ever stop supporting it I will continue to use the last version to support it, any website that breaks compatibility with this Firefox version can get fucked.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 174 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (8 children)

That’s a significant security risk, unfortunately.

If that happens, I’d suggest a fork with a built in blocker, one that still gets security patches from upstream Firefox.

Sometimes I think it was a mistake to let the programs we primarily use to view text and images become bloated virtual machines that execute megabytes of arbitrary code with every page load.

[–] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was on dial-up internet well after most people had moved to dedicate higher speed connections. It was very obvious then that websites were just piling more crap in and I was thinking about how much of a problem that trend was going to be for our hardware. That wasn’t even considering how much those companies would be dipping into our time, sanity, and privacy.

I.e. it is the last usable browser.

[–] CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

IE was the first unusable browser
