For me it's always leaves, except for the sports team because that is a proper noun and they made it that way.

Moderator Guidelines
Moderator Guidelines
- Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
- Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
- When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
- Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
- Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
- Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
- Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
- Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
- Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
- Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
- Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
- Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
- First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
- Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
- No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
- Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
- Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
That makes sense! It's probably how most people use it. So when you are talking about the individual leaves in your salad, you would say leaves. To me the are salad leafs.
I think I also leaf through the pages of a book, if that's related.
Oh that's a good point, in verb form it could also be leafs ("she leafs through the pages")
So leaves is a noun and leafs is a verb? So what is it that the Toronto Maple leafs thru? A book? A fat wad of cash, maybe?
they leaf it all in the rink
Who's "they" in this context? The Toronto Maple sounds like a single tree.
it's
IDK who's downvoting you, I'm upvoting this is fun!
That's what I was missing!! Thanks :D
Leaves are for photosynthesis.
For Canadians who hate the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans, Leafs is a source of schadenfeude.
Because they are named after a singular Maple Leaf they are all Maple Leafs. Like people that play for the Oilers are Oilers and not Oileronians.
Makes sense!
Sometimes I see a flock of Nissan Leafs outside playing in the dirt
Another good one!
Leafs: hockey team
Leaves: someone making an exit
Finally a solution to Eats, Shoots, and Leafs.
I call them the Maple leaves just to piss off their chronically sad fans.
True
Plants have leaves and Toronto has Leafs.
This leaves a stain in my brain.
No, but patronize and patronize are pronounced very differently based on context.
How so?
I thought it was pronounced the same whether or not you're visiting their restaurant, or making a big deal about it because you think it is beneath you.
If pat rhymes with hat, you're visiting the restaurant.
If pat rhymes with hate, the thing is beneath you.
Thanks! TiL i pronounce both of them rhyming with hate
Looks like it's a regional dialect, this entry shows that sometimes the vowel is changed depending on meaning and sometimes the same vowel is used for both meanings.
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/patronize
I think its mostly that I'm far more likely to hear british people use the word to mean looking down on, and americans are more likely to mean be a patron, so I conflated the difference into the meaning. But according to wiktionary I'm not the only one who does that so, maybe not.
Don't patronize me. Now did you patronize the bar or not?
One is Canadians. The other are ex marijuana smokers
leafs is confusing for me 🤷
i see this in my dictionary ☞
(4chan, internet slang, humorous, sometimes pejorative, plural leafs) A Canadian person.
Huh i never came across this usage before, good to know!
For me it's more like a tree has many leaves, but I can collect 5 leafs off the ground.
I am aware that this is Wrong. It just seems like a distinction to me about whether there are a vast generalized amount of leaves or a smaller, countable number of leafs.
thats cool keep your distinction its a fun quirk to hold
Make like a tree and leaf!
Leaves: Fall every autumn, beautiful greens to oranges, bring joy to everyone
Leafs: Fail every spring, blue and white, bring joy to all hockey fans except their own
leafs is my username somewhere :neofox_baa:
simples, leafs is failure to reference, leaves is multiple leafs
