Taking this too seriously for a shitpost community but the people you meet while getting a degree will get you a job (at least in CS if you graduated pre-2020)

At least half of the jobs I've had after graduating were referrals and I've given plenty of referrals back to people I know

I didn't make any friends in college (health issues+ I was a little older), but I did my work and asked questions. Apparently that was enough for my main professor to bend over backwards for me. He basically hand delivered two internships to me along with a personal project for credit.

Even if you don't know many people, gaining opportunities really still comes down to who you know and being decent to them.

CS job market was pretty bad before 2020, it was there along with non-health bio with poor job prospects.

Or just be liked can be enough.

I got my job at random from a recruiter who reached out. I didn't like the job all that much but they liked me so I took it. It was a little bit more money in a field I like better, plus it's close to home.

Fast Forward a few years, I had another opportunity but other side of the city + more money. I approached the owners with what was going on bc I felt comfortable doing so since we had good rapport. Told them about the offer, I dug into it to find I'm under paid a bit so I thought if they could pay me more I'd stay... Ended up getting a significant raise after the talk since they appreciated my honesty and wanted to keep me, and saves me the commute too!

recruiter is different from getting it through nepotism, nepo is one someone knows someone getting the applicant said job, bypassing all the bs interviews(or at least most of them).

That's why the rich send their kids to overpriced universities. Not to learn anything, but to be close to other rich kids.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 2 weeks ago

and get hired at a rich firm, because they know that rich kids parents, or employees.

Can confirm. Every job move upward is because I knew a guy.

Can you introduce the rest of us to this guy? What's his secret!?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 2 weeks ago

said as much on the job forums, before the job sites shut them down.(apparently they were giving companies bad publicity by exposing thier hyprocisies"

[–] UniversalFlamingo@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

It's not who you are, it's who you know.

like nepotism, thats how people get pretty far with next to no experience as a fresh graduate in academically hard degrees. people were discussing the current job market being trashed due to AI, and people brag despite of this and acted like they were hired all on thier own, they know people were hired, just because they knew someone that knew the boss of said company.

we had a professor in CC, where he was super snobby in the way he thinks students should learn chemistry(gen chem was extremely hard for being a CC class), yea you went to princeton for your education, doesnt mean you expect 24/7 student just because you can afford to study 24/7 because you were well off.
