Isn't 74 like a crazy number? Like no one can stay conscious through that kind of number?

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 77 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I’ve read about this before. It’s worse than you think. It’s not done all at once and she doesn’t know when it will happen.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 85 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's terrorism and not punishment. About sending a message to everyone else. Drawing out the abuse gives more visibility than a single incident. And they'll turn around and say it's in accordance to a loving god. Right.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Yup Iran is one of the worst countries in the world and if it wasn't for oil money propping up the lunatics we'd be all happier without it.

Seriously? Like they give her a couple lashes, let her go, then grab her off the street a week later and give her some more?

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

Definitely not what I expected if so. More like, a few lashes, wait a few minutes. Make it last longer, make her unable up anticipate the pain.

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don’t remember exactly and I don’t have the stomach to search it again. But lashing is done in the butt. Just like a jail sentence, you’re ordered to present yourself at a place where you’ll receive your punishment. They put you over some kind of bench and expose your buttocks. By the fifth lash the skin is already broken and you’re bleeding. So a “doctor” can order the punishment to stop. Months later you’re ordered back to continue your sentence.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of caning? I'm pretty sure that's exactly how Singapore does it, but it's a thin wooden rod, not a whip.

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

Maybe I’m mixing torture techniques. There’s also flogging that follows the same pattern, but IIRC, the victim stays jailed during sentence, and it’s done on the back.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

73 would have been much more reasonable.

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh, right, totally fine at 73

[–] lena 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

@betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world was obviously being sarcastic (unless you're playing along too and I'm the socially inept one here!)

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes, I was playing around.

[–] lena 4 points 2 months ago

Ah, thanks for the clarification!

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I think that losing consciousness thing isn't real. At least not mostly.

[–] AFKBRBChocolate@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

People do pass out from pain. 74 lashes is kind of insane. Like back in the day on ships, wasn't single digits most common?

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah, kind of thought it might even be fatal. Not that they would care.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 37 points 2 months ago

Bunch of fucking barbarians

Religion - crushing civilization since... since human monkeys dreamed up gods.

[–] Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

It's funny to me that you say this because thinking don't this one, humans are just anthropomorphic primates that have decided that we're the best. Humans will do anything to try to separate us and then make religion as thing and go humanity hasn't starts until this one carpenter made a cult. Try to use the whole we think where we come from are conscious and have a society we can talk have a language and look st each other differently ; SO DO ANIMALS!!!!!

I bet salmon look up at the moon and glance and wonder what it's all about but humans need to put a reason to it.

Apex predators aren't even better than anything else out there they can just eat whatever the fuck they want. Let's not forget the how many ice ages and cave people and the religion free Neanderthals and ages of time where animals bigger than the tallest building roamed in the land, sea and air.

Humans are a fucking joke even if you strip away religious things and all that humans are a fucked up species that unless it's our pets, seeing a dead animal in the street going to the zoo or hunting we don't give a fuck.

Like you know how they say eyes are the gateway to the soul well Steve Irwin knew it and he looked at other animals like an animal and respected them for what they were, that's why he was so special and it's so fucked up that anyone who can do that, who can truly have a bond with the creatures that are surrounding us, our fellow animals are the people who get called having a way with animals when it's really just connecting in the way that we are them.

[–] Jessicat@lemmy.world 32 points 2 months ago

For singing a patriotic song. That should not be a controversial act much less a criminal one.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 21 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Total shithole. Iranian people deserve better but it's only going to get worse thanks to Trump leaving them hanging and Bibi helping bomb them.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

I remember the people of the Iranian diaspora being so happy about tenuous Trumps war, thinking he would help change the regime.

Trump doesn't help people, he doesn't care about anything but himself.

[–] joostjakob@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

The people of Iran are generally quite nice. I wouldn't call the entire country a shithole just because its run by fundamentalists

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I don't have a problem with Islam, I know plenty of people I'd consider decent/good that are Muslim. That being said as an atheist who thinks all religions are insane, I think Islam isn't far from Christianity of 1000 years ago. Christianity used to be just as bloody and cruel, but it moved on to what we have as modern Christianity. Which isn't great, but nowhere near what it was. Islam as a whole hasn't moved on completely, which would be something akin to when the Catholic Church was in power in Europe.

Not spreading hate, Islam isn't evil or make you evil, I just think it needs to evolve with at least a tad common sense like Christianity.

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I think the difference is less that Islam is behind the curve and more that Islam is disproportionately practiced in theocratic nations. Religious echochambers that are largely monocultural get really fucked up really fast. Mormonism and all the fucked up shit in Utah. Hasidic Jewish communities, and israel. All the theocratic Muslim nations. Theres a reason the bible belt's version of Christianity is more fucked-up than the version you more often find in the rest of the country. If I remember right its the Buddhist majority group carrying out a genocide in Myanmar -- and I feel like in the west we tend to think of Buddhists as pretty peaceful.

An echo chamber normalizes things that otherwise wouldn't be accepted as normal, and allows them to exacerbate themselves, and religions tend to have some fucked shit burried in them that shows up when it doesnt have to be rationalized to outsiders. You tend to see that fucked shit a lot less when the people practicing those religions are also in community with folks who aren't part of their religion.

Which to be clear, is true of many things not just religion. You can also see it in pockets of political echochambers online, even on the fediverse, but online theres always the risk of context collapse, in a way that gets less and less true as a region becomes more monocultural, as tends to happen under theocracy.

Stop being a weak bitch, just go with the second sentiment full throttle. It's the correct one.

[–] Aatube@lemmy.dbzer0.com -5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Iran is the first time in millennia this kind of Islam has been a state

Edit: Am I wrong? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shia_Islam

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

To think the book actually only encourages donning a headscarf. Fundamentalist always prevail in islam, and woman always the victim of men's rule.

[–] Danarchy@lemmy.nz 8 points 2 months ago

Damn just when they won so many hearts and minds

[–] patruelis@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It is a fucked up country. I'm happy Trump helped. Oh wait...

[–] nightwatch_admin@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

You’re not wrong, he definitely helped the Ayatollahs.

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Is this even survivable? If she doesn’t bleed out, she’ll have to deal with infections.

[–] FTonsilStones@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

This woman in Aceh got 100 lashes:

The woman’s flogging was briefly paused because she could not bear the pain, according to an Agence France-Presse reporter in the field.

Apparently she survived it though.
