That is insanely ugly for Toronot's waterfront.

3,500 spots, 680 electric vehicle charging stations, up to 100 bicycle parking spaces,

What the fuck Canada, 100 bicycle spaces? That’s about 20m2?

[–] No_Maines_Land@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

You could fit like... 8 cars in that space!

My home town in the Netherlands has give it take 50.000 inhabitants

It's train station alone has a bicycle parking garage that houses well over 3000 bicycles

That's just for a train station.

There is no car parking there at all, and just a few stops where people can be dropped off / picked up

Alas we will never be anything remotely like the Netherlands. We are too spread out now and too car dependent. It will take decades to correct.

And? It took the Netherlands a good 20 years at the least to get the basics done. France is doing it at breakneck speed now.

The problem is that you need the political will, you need politicians who are willing to talk truth and not be a mouthpiece for the car industry

I agree with you. I also am not even remotely hopeful we can accomplish that anywhere near as quickly nor I do I think the NDP has a prayer in hell of ever having a national majority. I wish that weren’t the case but while I work to make our reality different I don’t believe it will be anytime soon since I work for the ideal but I live in the real.

Also, it says "up to 100 bicycle parking spaces" . That could also mean 50, 25, or 0 bicycle spaces.

How many Penny-farthings would that be?

Ontario is in the process of REMOVING bike-lanes because all of our politicians are criminals.

As uninspiring and dystopian as a parking lot is, I think in this particular place we’re at, it can be helpful. There’s lots of car traffic by the lakefront after people exit the highway, and instead of them trying to drive up the narrow streets looking for parking at various residences and roadsides they can now leave their car here and potentially take public transport for any further uptown activities. It might help relieve some congestion and it’s owned by the government of Ontario so the profit it generates can be helpful. I’m not a fan of the whole Ontario Place debacle and the 99 year lease for a spa, but I can see the upside of this one. Or maybe I’m just overdosing on copium because there’s nothing I can do to keep DoFo’s meddling fingers out of Toronto.

I appreciate your optimism.

This is great, as I'm sure any future parking fee money will go directly back to the taxpayers. A win-win for everyone! /s
