Right now? It's a weird time because our soft 2 party situation fell apart, meaning the somewhat decent labour government doesn't always have the normal players to call them out. Nobody is quite sure where that's going to end up.

In general there's always been a bit of hostile capitalism in this country, and with how things have been going globally it's not doing great. It definitely could be worse, but every now and then you'll see stuff like this pop up.

Most people who participate in local government are property owners who are afraid of their property prices going down. A large visible homeless population is seen as bad for property prices.
