I’ve always been confused by this line of thinking… you won’t/can’t solve any grand, complex, overarching problem, that’s not how problems work, so it’s just thinking about it you’re getting off on, but in both the saving the world fantasies and the sock pick up, nothing is actually getting done isn’t this just “I fantasize about being great while my actions reflect what I really am”?

Sorry my taking things literally brain wants to have this discussion I know it’s a joke/meme but I guess I’m curious about it cause to me these just feel like telling on yourself type jokes?

I took "solve world hunger" to be a hyperbolic placeholder for addressing/responding to any large, pressing problem. E.g., critical system outage at work, natural disaster, or even just a big project with a deadline (like maybe a dissertation on how to solve world hunger for a PhD in public health)

I think its at least these 2 things,

  • physical inertia, activating your body to get into action and do the highly specialised complex task (it is) while dealing with all the sensory stimulation and distractions between now and having it done. Versus, here is a cool mental problem to make your brain less bored and requires zero movement or activation and where getting distracted can mean finding an even more creative solution.

  • But it’s also theory vs practical, saving the world, thats broad. You are not thinking of all the little details that are stressing you out (and causing avoidance) The sock is not the best example for this but real life tasks have an unavoidable rawness and every decision is a commitment with effect and consequence.

It's the right priority. Order in personal space pales in comparison to people suffering. The bigger news is that people can lift a sock while people are starving.

So what can be done to end world hunger?

Doing chores IRL vs doing chores in a video game

Finishing Forza Horizon 6 in 3 days, no problem.

Taking out the trash? sound tiring just thinking about it.
