Guess I'll have to limit myself to the 10,000 other games to play on PC, then.

[–] ericwdhs@discuss.online 15 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Also, it's not like most or all of these exclusives won't eventually be in emulation territory.

[–] jonathan@piefed.social 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

PS4 is 13 years old and a tiny fraction of its games are considered "playable" in emulators so far.

Each generation has been exponentially more challenging to emulate than the previous, so don't hold your breath for reliable PS5 emulation.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Really? I've observed it being less challenging. People have more experience, the talent pool is larger, the tools are better, and the hardware is closer to PC hardware to begin with.

[–] Kraiden@piefed.social 9 points 2 weeks ago

Also PS4 is x86, not some weird proprietary BS like PS3 was, and look how far that's come!

[–] ericwdhs@discuss.online 1 points 1 week ago

You got a lot of good replies already, but I wanted to add that my "eventually" was intended to be vague enough to cover multiple decades. I occasionally play 30 year old games already, so half that is actually making good time in my book.

Was he worried the brand had too much good will? Because it didn't but its sure to be worse now.

They saw how much money they could make being just another multiplatform publisher, and it scared the shit out of them.

The console war is over.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 5 points 2 weeks ago

But this is a retraction of that. Like some last ditch effort to make PlayStation viable as a console. Console makers will eventually have to accept that it will move from purposed to general devices no matter what they do.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They saw this as nothing more than a tease for PC gamers, in the hopes that the taste they've gotten will result in those PC gamers buying a console in order to play the sequels.

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 2 points 2 weeks ago

Consoles in modern times are such adumb idea

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As a PlayStation user, I think this is crap. I hate how I can’t play PC games and they never plan to come out for PlayStation… so this is equally crappy for PC users.

[–] hzl@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Except that every one of these games will eventually be emulated on PC.

[–] meowmeow@quokk.au 1 points 2 weeks ago

Haha, that’s probably true!

[–] Stupendous@lemmy.world 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's like 1 video game a year

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That you need dedicated otherwise useless hardware to play yes

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hey now, it's perfectly capable of running the same games released on every other platform, for the low hardware price of... six hundred dollars?! Fuck off!

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago

Its not it can't and my computer is better

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This is super fucking dumb. Fire that man.

He is serving his function. Sony is gripping their platform with both hands, after nearly letting it slip away. The future presented by Helldivers 2 and various Spider-Mans is one where Sony's a relatively large publisher for several important studios. The future where they deny reality and cosplay the 90s console war for another decade is one where they are the biggest fish in a small pond, and that makes more money, somehow.

I'm unclear how that will play out if Microsoft simply declines to release another Xbox.

[–] fuzzywombat@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

Sony seems to be completely out of touch with the reality. During the time when the console prices have skyrocketed to the point it's no longer an option for entire segment of the population, they decide that it's right time to go back to console exclusive games? It also baffles me that there are fully grown men that are actually celebrating the return of console exclusives. What a bizarre tribalism at work here. I think I'm just going to slowly work through my back catalog until some semblance of sanity returns.

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 8 points 1 week ago

This is Sony, folks. Once they get in a mood to hang onto something needlessly, they do it.

The last Betamax cassette was manufactured in 2016.

[–] woelkchen@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

We'll see. None of these games ever had day 1 releases on PC. The next mainline God of War and Horizon games aren't even announced, so things may change by then.

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago

Huh. Guess I won't be getting any of Sony's games then. I have no interest in a console.

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

Haha yeah wow all fucking, what, like one of them a year? I’m sure I’ll miss them.

[–] CaptainCancel@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don’t get it. If they want to increase PlayStation Plus subscriptions, they should limit the multiplayer games they port to PC. The last time I bought a console for a single player game was Final Fantasy 7 back in 1997.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Well aside, it's surprising nothing on PS2 tempted you. Several tentpole titles did famously get PC ports, but if you're more about Kingdom Hearts than GTA, that machine was like $150 by 2004.
