Virginia’s Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, vetoed a bill on Thursday that would have restored collective bargaining rights for 50,000 public sector workers in the state. Union leaders say the veto is a “betrayal” and “slap in the face” after the governor campaigned last year on promises to restore collective bargaining rights.

Though majorities in both chambers of Virginia’s general assembly passed legislation that would restore bargaining rights to most public sector workers, Spanberger introduced an amended version of the bill last month that was eventually rejected by the assembly.

According to an analysis from the Economic Policy Institute, Spanberger’s amended bill so heavily weakened the collective bargaining rights initially passed by the general assembly that it would “lock Virginia into an unstable, ineffective system in which collective bargaining would remain merely ‘optional’”.

Really giving people great reasons to support you in November Democrats, keep it up 🙏💞 (/s, obviously).

It’s fucking infuriating that she’s also just rolling over for the VA Supreme Court that just threw out all our votes. Her response is basically “Aw shucks, guess you voters need to vote harder in Nov!”

Typical weak spine centrist bullshit. Good thing she can’t run for consecutive terms in VA. If she runs for anything else I’m not voting for her. I don’t give a shit I’m at my limit with these fucking losers. If you can’t fight for what people clearly voted for get out of politics.

I really thought this former CIA agent was going to be a stronger advocate for political and workplace democracy /s

No I didn’t expect much, she was cursing at Democratic leadership on a call in 2020 about how “defund the police” nearly cost her the congressional seat in 2020. That’s where I first heard of her.

But as a politician she should be able to read the fucking room. Northern VA delivered her the referendum victory in April and the governorship last fall. NOVA has been hit hard by DOGE layoffs and maybe collective bargaining would have kept some of those jobs alive?

These past two weeks have just been a big “fuck you” to some of her biggest support bases. Instead she’s trying to find the same mythical “independent Republican voter” that Kamala was looking for.

Reminder that 95% of Republicans voted for Trump in 2024.

50k workers should go on strike until they have bargaining rights again

They have rights. It's just they are not self-enforcing them.

Sounds like they should go on strike and also primary her.

[–] jontree255@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

After the past two weeks I can’t see her winning another state wide election. She’s also sinking the entire Democratic ticket across the state for the next election.

[–] Turret3857@infosec.pub 2 points 1 month ago

unfortunately she just got in. 3 more years until primaries.

Doesn’t this blatantly violate the US constitution?

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

I don't think Virginians care about their constitutions. Otherwise they’d be physically removing her from office, houses and all.

Wow, didn't take long for her to stab the voters in the back.
