And the domestication of humanity by the house cat continues unabated

And I'm okay with it. All hail our fuzzy overlords.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Ha ha, that is true, we domesticated dogs, cats domesticated us.

I'm giving you the benefit of a doubt rn, but this better not be a fucking racist "Asians eat cats" joke 😐️

[–] WongKaKui@piefed.ca 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Flashbacks to school years as a Chinese American 😕 (I heard that "joke" too many times to count)

"Hey [my name], do you eat cats and dogs for dinner?"

-In Deep Blue Philly nonetheless 🙄

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's so fucking awful. Even more when you consider the local culture! We all know people from pa ky ga fl and tx eat dogs for lunch and cats for breakfast (reversed in tx) and it would be such a faux pas to eat either for dinner.

  • laughs in chinese ???
[–] Cyrus@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

I’m sorry you had to go through this as a kid. They clearly didn’t know that it’s for dinner

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

I still want statistics on how many people that eat a a chinese restaurant make a joke about eating cats and dogs.

I think it's probably like 90%, but maybe not now as no one can afford to eat out now.

[–] Cyrus@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

They’re petting them though, right?

Oh, calm down. Racism isn't in the text, it's in the intent. Telling jokes about race doesn't make you racist.
My Native American, Asian, and black friends all tease each other (and me) about race, and no one gets offended. Stereotypes exist for a reason, and they can be pretty funny.
life's too short to get offended over everything you can, lighten up.

The problem is this is the internet, not your friend group. We don't know rando strangers on the internet, so I can't trust that they're not racist. Furthermore it's just an overdone and boring joke.

I'm black and yes I do make stereotypical jokes with my friends, but that's because I know them. And some jokes just never hit anyway.

I get offended on the behalf of others because I want them to understand they're not wrong for feeling upset or hurt by the crazy shit they see online, because I see crazy shit online and wonder if people think it's right and or normal.

Literally someone else in the thread just talked about people teasing and bullying them with this joke, so clearly it's not funny for everybody.

[–] BloodMuffin@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 days ago

no joke is funny for everybody

getting offended by a joke is your problem, not the joke-teller's. no one cares if you don't enjoy a joke. you just look foolish getting offended by it.

I personally thought this example was funny because it didn't actually say anything about people eating cats.

A based comment about not being so far up your own arse with oversensitivity that you can still smell reality, and enjoy life? Whaaaat

Fr though there's a reason people are hypersensitive and decide to police others - there are a lot of unapologetically bigoted dudes out there and their volume has kind of freaked people out.

Essentially, cis-het white exclusionary folk (usually men) cause rifts between the majority, calls them the minority, and the rest of the palefaces tend to overcompensate apologising for their jerk acquaintance.

But when you actually ask the opinion of someone who has lived experience, usually they're cool with stereotypes and identity-based jokes that don't come from a place of hatred.

And we're sure the parasite making people like cats isn't the reason for it?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago

Meh who cares
