Like the title says I am trying the boycott the US thing hard, so I have gotten rid of a lot of services. After my iPhone and iPad give out I will be looking into alternatives my homepods are going to need to find another forever home sooner or later.

Anywho that brings me to why I am posting here. A few months ago my place decided to flood and damage a lot of things I have just been hoarding! So I will get to start with a much cleaner slate of things, I get to decide what is coming back into my place and what is coming back or being replaced. It just really clicked for me that this was going to help me embrace this lifestyle some more.

I wanted to share it with the community on the book of Faces, but I do not use it anymore and I was not going to go through the effort to download the app sign in and mention it in the group I was in. Only to then decide to uninstall the app and not see any comments or anything. So I thought Lemmy, I already have a Lemmy account that I use why not post it here. I may not get the same dopamine hit but at least I will hopefully get some.

Tl:dr: Best way to clean out crap from your place is have you single floor suite flood, and Facebook is no good.

You're doing great. I'm in the US but I'm also slowly but determinedly switching to all open source software and local alternatives to big corps.

I'm the same here in Australia. I've also been telling people to go to Canada instead, and those who have, have said they loved it.

I spoke to some airport staff yesterday in Ireland, and they say there's a lot of interest in Asia. The flights to the USA haven't been filled for a while now. Why risk getting detained?

I hope I can bring you even a small dopamine hit. If nobody has told you yet, know that at least 16 of us are proud of you. Keep it up 👊

Just wondering... and I am being genuine, how do you handle software/digital life issues while boycotting the US? The answer may well be obvious, and if so, I apologize for the dumb question.

I am moving to more and more self hosted and open source things. My hardware is moving to things like raspberry pi’s. My next phone will be a pixel, so I can install that open source OS, I will need to figure out what I am going to do about replacing my iPad.

I use a self hosted Nextcloud to store files, contacts, and calendars. I use a self hosted Immich to host my pictures. I own a few domains one that I am using to learn more about self hosting and one that my blog and email is on, both are hosted in Canada using CIRA the Canadian register. With my emails I create a new email address for every service so that I can easily find out who has leaked my data or sold it off to Google or who ever and just shut down the address. I use a pihole setup in my home lab to block ads, trackers, and sites I do not want to visit. I self host searXNG to replace all the search engines that are trying to harvest my data, sure it scraps from the Google and a few other engines (I do not remember what I have turned on) but no one but me sees it. I tried to figure out how to use peertube, but that failed so I use Unwatched on my iOS devices to block most of Google’s tracking while I am on Youtube, and I sail the high seas for other media.

No need to apologize a lot of Big Tech is in the US, and it is harder for people to see the forest through the trees. Open Source Software is huge, people have been saying this is the year for Linux for many years now, but with Microslops royal F ups recently and the world starting to trust the US less and less Linux may be having a surge do not know if it is the year of Linux yet but we are getting there.

The fact that you are on Lemmy rather than Reddit, shows that open source is really going places. Lemmy is run off of the Fediverse an open source standard that hosts things like mastodon and lemmy, I am sure there are more but they are just escaping me right now.

You're definitely doing it. And you're right, things are getting ripe for a FOSSolution Revolution. I was just curious about the dependency upon US software, and it seems like you are committed to finding your way through. At the heart, my interest in all of this (beyond my own digital privacy and freedom) is that, in my own opinion, a lot of dangerous things happening within the US (and elsewhere) and knowing the world is reacting is the ray of hope.

Don't get me wrong - I am a US Citizen, and I still love the land I live on. As misguided and morally questionable as the "Founding Fathers" appear in our times, I still believe in some of the notions they espoused, like Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. I just don't know that those notions have any connection to what grew from that seed, at least for the main of the populace. Anyway, thanks for the reply, and best of luck to you. Hopefully, one day, We The People might be a real thing.

My first suggestion is stop paying for services, buy paying I do not mean with just money but with your eyeballs. Get a good whole home ad/tracker blocker, I started with pihole and have added add-on features to make things better from everything I have seen my current pihole setup is better than the basic Adguard Home setup many will say they switched from pihole to adguard home and it is better, but from all the reviews I have seen my setup is better than the basic adguard home setup. You do not need to go as extreme as I have with email, just get off of gmail and learn about email aliasing. I really plan on self hosting my own email stuff and blog in the not to distant future.

The masses are not yet ready to jump ship from big tech but it is coming.
