Facebook will announce some new feature, spin up a few million more bots, and have a glowing report for the investors next month.

I never got it anyway, right from the beginning. Why would I want to tell everybody my business, and why would I want to know everybody else's business?

I opened an account in my name at the beginning, so I could lock it down, but I never did anything with it. No profile info, posts, nothing. I have to do some Instagram for my business, but it's very inconsistent. Now and then I get a good photo, and I'll think to post it, but rarely.

I can't wait to see Facebook to go away.

One of side hustle I do is tech support for senior people in my community. And amount of time I have to deal with stuff related to Facebook is staggering.

So many of seniors have multiple accounts because they don't understand how it work and just hit whatever buttons they see pop up until they get back into Facebook feed. So it's not user friendly and even worse, UI get changed constantly and I have to Google around across multiple threads different forums, etc to find answers. And so many more issues, I couldn't list them all.

Good to see people may finally be waking up to the idea that these companies are trash.

[–] Tiral@lemmy.zip 17 points 16 hours ago

That's awesome. Facebook is a freaking plague.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 8 hours ago

But it down.

This fucking site, I swear... I want to delete my account. But my account is blocked. I never used Facebook on another device than my PC, never on mobile. And to unlock my account to delete it, I have to... log in from another device. No other way. I tried everything, and the best is, their fucking customer centre is a useless chatbot. I hate this.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

I deleted my account and it was reactivated 3 years later because they didn’t want to show less users to shareholders

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 6 points 12 hours ago

wonder if you told them you moved to the EU and they needed to comply with GDPR

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 12 hours ago

Do you really not have access to another internet device? A friend or parent’s phone with a private browser window?

[–] BygoneNeutrino@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm in the same boat. I even tried emailing them my license. There is nothing I can do to delete my account from highschool.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

because fake users drive advertising revenue.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 8 hours ago

That's it. Follow the money. It's ALL that matters.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Just start posting a bunch of political content they don't agree with to get your account deleted.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 26 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

It’s probably because Israel was getting bombed last month and their bots were temporarily unavailable.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 4 points 11 hours ago

That's my guess also. Probably some botnet went offline 6 or 12 or 36 months ago and the new accounts timed out.

[–] BigDiction@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

I wonder if that metric counted users active in their comments plugin. They sunset that comments plugin around Jan or Feb ‘26

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 21 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

20 million actual users or 20 million ai bots.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 18 points 22 hours ago

I'd assume the bot count is increasing, not decreasing.

[–] emerycan4@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not surprised honestly, their stuff is getting boring and there are far better platforms this time. I hope they do something about their whole whatever..

[–] username123@sh.itjust.works 13 points 16 hours ago

I hope they don't and finally die

I'm so old I remember when Facebork was just for young people.

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 6 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

I'm so old I remember when Facebook didn't exist :) Or Zuck, in fact.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (3 children)

Shit, I remember when Nixon resigned. I also remember thinking that Nixon was as bad as Republicans could ever get.

[–] osanna@lemmy.vg 1 points 2 hours ago

Oh my sweet summer child.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

I was out after dark, riding bikes with my best friend in the street in front of his house. My friend's mom came out and shouted at me to go home, and my friend to go inside. Then she shouted "That asshole, Ford, pardoned Nixon!" I had no idea what she was talking about, or why she was mad at us.

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 6 points 15 hours ago

same. I keep thinking "it can't get worse than this," and republicans say: "Hold my beer."

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 12 hours ago

Harley Davidson effect.

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 13 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

We feed meta billions of dollars and all our data, watch out what they are going to do, they already approached the fediverse and tried to make their move there.

[–] RustyShackleford@programming.dev 4 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

I don't understand. Did they try to buy Lemmy?

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 2 points 12 hours ago

Threads can interact with the fediverse, when meta rolled in the platform there were many talks about unfederating with them.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

No, they hosted their own instance... or at least that is what i understand

[–] alpha1beta@piefed.social 190 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Ledivin@lemmy.world 72 points 1 day ago (13 children)

Seriously, how are there still so many people on meta? What percentage are bots is the real question 🤷‍♂️

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 6 points 21 hours ago

Seriously, how are there still so many people on meta?

Social networks become part of people life, they use them to talk to relatives, friends and to build communities. Once social networks started to become popular, facebook with the help of governments, rich people and other corporations managed to become the biggest platform, they got so big that they turned into a phone book where everyone was in. Meta used the billions we feed them, our data and their popularity to build/buy other social networks and tools people are now hooked up. In italy whatsapp replaced mails and it's what most people are using to talk with each other.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 59 points 1 day ago (18 children)

Every one one of my friends and family use it daily.

And a huuuuuge sell is marketplace. Literally no one touches Craigslist anymore. So if you wanna buy used from people, you literally need marketplace.

They are reporting "family daily active users" and I assume that this "family" means all of their apps. They are reporting 3.56 billion DAU, but Whatsapp alone has 3.3 billion users according to some sources. So we really do not know how Facebook or Instagram are doing from those numbers - and it does make sense that user numbers are dropping when Russia is restricting access to WhatsApp & Co and Iran is switching off its internet.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 1 points 12 hours ago

It absolutely boggles my mind that in a lot of countries, WhatsApp is basically required for daily life. Governments, businesses, families… they all use it for damn near everything.

It’s fun being part of that number.
