If only a country did this, where 4 companies didn't own 90% of the newspaper market.

Go Australia, tax them the shit out if their safe heavens!

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They're just grifting for Rupert. We don't get the money.

[–] emmy67@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If the funding goes to independent news sources like 404media but in Australia. I'll be very happy.

Unfortunately I don't know of much in the way of independent media in Australia.

we have loads of great independent media that collectively control about 0.01% of the market.

they will not be seeing this money. it's going to the oligarchy controlled legacy media.

juice media did a great bit on the previous iteration of it https://www.thejuicemedia.com/news-corp-bargaining-code/

I don't see anything about it going directly to them only. Except for the 4 year old video. The code was supposed to be updated at least once since then. Any idea on what changed if anything?

Edit:

According to this it seems the only hurdles are "be a corporation" and have 150k in revenue over the last year. So the bar is pretty low tbh.

Yeah the truth is, this will benefit the Murdochs and Stokeses fairly exclusively overall.

This government isn’t fighting Big Tek for the little bloke. They’re doing it to try and stop these media groups from putting out too much bad publicity.

The proposed News Bargaining Incentive, as currently drafted, does not address the underlying issues in the News Media Bargaining Code on which it is based. Commercially focused eligibility requirements create barriers to participation for small publishers and volunteer-based community media, further entrenching the status quo in a media landscape that is already one of the most concentrated in the world. Funding is needed not only to prop up existing publishers, but to regenerate a battered news industry and better serve Australian communities with relevant and reliable news services.

https://lina.org.au/2026/04/28/news-bargaining-incentive-revenue-distribution/ and https://www.cbaa.org.au/news/cbaa-comms/2026/04/28/response-to-the-news-bargaining-incentive-consulta

you need to give them an email address but you can read some broader thoughts here https://www.crikey.com.au/2026/04/29/news-media-bargaining-incentive-big-tech-australian-news/

Thanks I'll take a look

We really need a list detailing which independent people-owned news media are best for specific countries, internationally, and online

What does 404media specialize in?

https://solutionsjournalism.org/, https://goodgoodgood/ com & https://goodnewsnetwork.org/ are good too from my experience

[–] emmy67@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

404 came out of vice I believe. Set up their own company after being laid off. Mostly tech, surveillance and science news. Obviously this is politics too since it is all politicised these days.

This is one of the more interesting reads.

It's about a porn platform creator going AI psychosis mode

[–] viov@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

So in a way we need more alternatives made from people who are laid instead of them going to same companies that will just lay them off again

Appreciate all this too, thank you!

if its going to Murdoch it isnt helping anything.

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Maybe they should coordinate this with the EU and Canada to ram it through Trump's tantrum.

Do we know if it worked? I thought the law got passed but we backed off from enforcing it due to america's recent instability and trade "negotiations". Source: Am befuddled Canadian.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

It backfired, meta completely blocked all news and media sites, and any link from them—except for alt-right ones of course.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 13 points 2 days ago

Yeah, if enough countries join, what are the facebooks going to do, go on strike? (if only)

All I know is I couldn't share any news links to any Mwta platform. That was when I still had an account.

Maybe if they show some fortitude we may reconsid...hahhaahha

Donald won’t be happy. Canada had to give up on this idea.
