This is a Lemmy Community for perchance.org, a platform for sharing and creating random text generators.

Feel free to ask for help, share your generators, and start friendly discussions at your leisure :)

This community is mainly for discussions between those who are building generators. For discussions about using generators, especially the popular AI ones, the community-led Casual Perchance forum is likely a more appropriate venue.

Pretty self-explanatory, I'm unable to create generators, save my old ones, or access them through my account. I've been on Perchance for over a year, and this has never been an issue, but all of a sudden I'm met with this message:

Seems like there was a problem while trying to save your generator. This could be to do with your internet connection, but it could also be a temporary problem with the server. Please copy and paste your generator data (lists and HTML) to a safe place before leaving or refreshing the page, or you could lose your work. If you keep getting errors even after waiting a couple of minutes, please make a post on lemmy.world/c/perchance to see if others are experiencing the same thing. Remember that you can click the "backups" button in the top-right of the screen to download past versions of your generator. Before doing anything though, make sure you copy and paste your data to a safe place! Sorry for the trouble - this stuff happens sometimes :|

This has been going on for several weeks, and not gonna lie, I'm getting kind of worried. I have multiple games and generators on here, and I doubt I can find somewhere else to host them that is as accessible and convenient as Perchance, but I'm seriously considering looking into alternatives. I can't even get the backup versions, because it's just "save" (broken), and account, nor can I access most of my generators, since going to 'view your generators' gives me a "there was a problem loading your generators ¯_(⊙_ʖ⊙)_/¯ check your internet connection? if the problem persists, please post to forum" message.

I've had internet every time I try this, so it's not an internet issue, I can still do whatever can be done with internet... so long as it's not on Perchance. Any advice, any solutions, any reassurances that Perchance is NOT closing, it's just bugged? Because I'm honestly kind of freaking out, seeing as I spent ages coding a game for my books as an interactive storyline, and I can't access that now.

Sorry about this, it sounds like a bug.

If you could answer these questions that would be very helpful:

  • Is it every time you try to save is the last several weeks, or just randomly on some days?
  • Is it one specific generator, or any generators?
  • Can you e.g. visit https://perchance.org/blank and save/fork it?
  • Can you try a different browser?
  • Can you try a different internet connection? (e.g. wifi vs phone hotspot)

The strangest part is this:

can’t even get the backup versions, because it’s just “save” (broken), and account

If you can't see the "backups" button, then the only thing I can think of is maybe an ad blocker or some other browser extension is doing something weird to the UI and/or network requests.

Neocities (https://neocities.org/) might be a handy alternative/backup if you mainly need HTML/JS hosting, and not the perchance engine/plugins/etc. It's fully open source too: https://github.com/neocities/neocities so it's objectively better than perchance in that (important) regard.

Rest assured it's just a bug. I think shutting down perchance would be kind of like deleting wikipedia in terms of "level of betrayal". It doesn't compute for me.

Edit: I did just fix an issue where invalid unicode sequences were blocking saves, but I doubt that was the cause because it wouldn't explain the lack of backups button or 'view your generators' list failure. My best guess is still something related to your browser or browser extensions or network issues, or something like that.

It's a constant thing, every time I try to save it's the same issue. I'm using the same device I've been using for ages, and it doesn't have any browser extensions besides the built-in virus protection and whatnot that all Chromebooks have, but it's never caused a problem before, and it's all generators. I did try forking, same issue---hit save, get the error code. Different browser, not with a Chromebook, I tried my laptop using Edge and have gotten the same issue, I'll probably try the laptop with Chrome when I get the chance (probably tomorrow at the soonest).

That does narrow it down a lot, thank you. I expected it to work in a different browser, so this is surprising.

The things I'm most curious about next are: (1) whether it works if you create a new account - you should be able to use a temp-mail or other throwaway email provider - and try again to fork https://perchance.org/blank and (2) whether it works on a different internet connection, like phone hotspot (with wifi disabled so it uses your phone data connection) or similar.
