I think Lemmy has one but it kinda misses the mark (also dead, ironically lol)
Like anyone believes for a nanosecond he didn't make that image himself.
He is the kind that slowly becomes more and more conservative and less and less funny and then cries about how he got cancelled on a talk show.
Bill Maher Syndrome
You can just say Dave Chappelle lmao
I remember watching Talking Funny with him, Louie C.K., Seinfeld and Chris Rock. It was really interesting and funny. Neither of those guys is watchable anymore. Incredible.
You have every right to make shitty jokes, just don't be offended when no one laughs.
Oh, but he would be. He is that kind of guy.
He is. That's like his whole act nowadays. Suuuper lame.
He has always been a FAR better writer than a performer.
And he was only such a good writer because he was in the room with Stephen Merchant who is better than Gervais in basically every way.
Amen. Stephen Merchant is a genius.
But thats just it and what most professional comedians are talking about. They dont want you to be genuinely offended or upset, but if you go to a comedy show or watch a 60 minute special. You laugh at 55 minutes but get offended at the 5 that are about a topic YOU are sensitive about, that 5 minutes wasnt all of a sudden serious statements meant to be taken seriously. It was all jokes. They dont owe anyone an apology because that person didnt like parts of their work. They KNOW that not everything is going to land for everyone. If 90% of the audience are laughing, you are killing it.
Keyword: professional.
These last few years have seen old comedians finding it hard to update their style. They're the ones hyperfocusing on people not finding their jokes funny, at this point. I defended Dave Chappelle at first, but it seems his standup has become the feel sorry for me hour.
I think Ricky Gervais especially exaggerates how offensive his material is just to have something to talk about. Carlin is a prime example of bitchy old man humor done right. But that's just my opinion.
I think Ricky has a problem in that some people go to his shows expecting a sterility of humor you find on tv and get proper standup. You almost never hear outrage about Jeselnik because his entire repertoire is "I'm saying the wildest shit I can think of and thats what you're here for"
I have mixed feelings about Dave Chappelle because I genuinely believe in inclusivity which unfortunately includes having jokes made about you (which some communities do not appreciate) but he just did too much and it crossed a line into feeling like bullying behavior so I dont fuck with him at all anymore.
I just expect funny, honestly.
He comes across as an angry man that doesn't know how to grip an audience anymore. As evidenced by the fact that he's more interested in the lecture than the joke.
I think going to see a comedian perform live, there is a certain level of consent to be exposed to controversial or offensive jokes, especially if they are known for that kind of thing. The problem is when that leaves the comedy club, and stops being a joke, and becomes "cover" for actual bigotry disguised as a "joke." Far too many people think that because it's funny when a professional says it in a stand-up show, it must also be funny when uncle Steve says it at Thanksgiving.
There is also the issue of punching down, and how that changes when you go from being a working comic doing small shows, to being famous and on Netflix. This is Chappelle's biggest issue imo. The guy who made Half Baked isn't the same guy who made Chappelle show, who isn't the same guy who intentionally picks on trans people for shock value.
The call of someone who cries when people actually do get offended.
I have free speech to hurt you, but you don't have free speech to hurt me
Kinda shit
When is the last time he updated his material? He's out here still spewing that new-atheist line like his mind is powered by Reddit circa 2013.
Ricky is his persona. A dim man, in a fortunate position, over his head. He's a stuffy old "ya dad" medium-level bigot like Archie Bunker; he's only able to get a laugh by being the joke.
I once saw a podcast or something that had Ricky, Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, and Louie CK. Now Ricky wasn't the only shit-head at that table, but he did stand out sharply when back-lit by all that talent.
Now Ricky wasn't the only shit-head at that table
That might be putting it mildly
I also watched that discussion and agree that he belonged there even less than Seinfeld, who is very rarely funny, but is at least tolerable on a conversational level.
This is so intensely cringe.
Can't stand him anymore, but his delivery has always been good imho.
But he just doesn't get it. He thinks slinging shit at "sacred cows" as actual literal fascists are forming ranks is somehow fair play. Like, it's not illegal, but you should know that some people are taking real sides in this, and to them jokes are more ammunition in their culture war.
In a better world I'd agree to sling away, but I think because of his privilege he doesn't see how tenuous the situation is (I didn't either back in the day).
My first experience with him I remember were some atheist clips of pretty much a convo you'd have in your head, very edgelord, very cringy to share, especially from older dude.
Then I saw some of his shows, which were very nice.
So I feel conflicted about him. I think he knows well, just is an OG edgelord hating just for the love of the game.
I love a lot of his work, but he is insufferable. Its like he never got all of his edge lordiness out of his system when he was a teen, and now he is doubling down.
Heβs good enough as a writer when paired with Stephen Merchant, who presumably balances the edgelord side out. When left to his own devices, howeverβ¦
If you're looking for offensive british comedians, just go for Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle. They're actually funny.
god i miss frankie boyles new world order :(
Never offered real fixes for the problems but made you laugh at the fucking state of things.
Jimmy Carr is horrendously unfunny though
Personal opinion but I can understand it.
A few years ago James Acaster did a bit in his stand-up about Gervaise: https://youtu.be/UHqma3rx-xI
If you want just the Gervaise bit without the lead-up, go to around 2:30
That's not fair, comparing Gervais to someone with actual talent is just mean.

It sucks because Extras was such a funny show
Someone actually took time to make that image.
Let's be real, anybody who would make that image doesn't have anything better to be doing anyway.
Isn't this the same person who pisses and moans when he sees a "woke"?
Eh who cares about what's upsetting him
Can't say I ever watched his comedy, and only know him from his award show comedy roasts of the audience which were funny, but overall not my type of comedian. What did he do?
he told some jokes. people got offended.
that about sums it up.
thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Used to be, then what happened?
I realized the "insufferable turd" shtick wasn't an act. He's a perpetual edgelord.
Yeah used to be a big fan of his too - Animals, Politics, Extras etc... then he did a Netflix special going on about how you can't make jokes about anything anymore and ripping on trans people just to get people to react and I was out. IDK what it is with Netflix specials and these comedians complaining about being cancelled despite the fact they're saying it on the most popular streaming platform in the world and they decide that some lame jokes about trans people is the best way to demonstrate their argument. Fucking weak.
