Were... We're you just holding onto this link for like years, waiting for just the right moment to share it?

'Cause if so, thank you.

[–] jellyfishhunter@lemmy.world 12 points 6 days ago

Let's hope the link lasts 70 more years

[–] SchmidtGenetics@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

No, a quick search from just knowing about this from my city brought me a link.

I've got a whole list of weird things that I bust out when the subject comes up.

[–] tedd_deireadh@piefed.social 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And now we're wondering too

Neither Bartley nor Pique have a good explanation for why the popular petroleum jelly is so liberally spread about the area.

"Maybe lots of people here using Vaseline," said Pique.

Bartley thinks it's just "people with a lot of time on their hands to do something stupid."

"Just wonder what kind of weirdos we got living in the neighbourhood," he said.

Criminals who gave the cops the slip.

Jfc and it just leaves us hanging?

[–] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

Ya I need some closure here

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 5 days ago

That is so fucking weird.

This falls in the category where “if it’s not useful to me, it must not exist.”

I have eczema. In my worst, I can go through a 1lb pot in 2 weeks.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Have you tried out based moisturisers? I went from heavy emoliants and having regular flair ups to an alcohol free oat creme and thing have been a lot better.

I passed through everything and ended up with immunosuppressants. Now I’m better. But for some time I switched between Vaseline and Aquaphor, specially during winter where the air is super dry due to house heating. I had humidifiers everywhere too.

[–] then_three_more@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Yikes that's bad. I hope for you that it stays under control

Have you had tried hydrocortisone that's much more commonly prescribed for eczema. Vaseline isn't medical, it's just lubricant

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 days ago

Oh yes, I passed through everything. Light therapy included. Cortisone of course helps, it’s magical, but it can fuck your heart up. I ended up taking immunosuppressants for 6 or 7 years, which opened me up for a few infections. But now, thank the Science Gods, I’m OK.

YSK that Vaseline, or petroleum jelly, is a fossil fuel derivative. It should also never be used as a lubricant with condoms, it can mess with the latex and make it break more easily.

They survive on the handful of people that like eating it on toast and go through a couple jars a week.

Vaselines Georg

[–] antbricks@lemmy.today 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Agree with this for most folks (using on hands or feet) but if you gotta cover more surface area it can get gone. My 8yo kid had a rash on his thighs and back and we used up a tub pretty quick.

Yup. A large tub can still last months, but it certainly has to be replaced regularly when used on arms, legs, and upper-chest regularly). Granted, I've largely switched to using CeraVe's healing ointment, so now a regular petroleum jelly tub does last a very long time, but the probably not applies to the replacement (which I have an empty 12oz container on the trashcan next to me now...)

You have not Seen my girlfriends Vaseline consumption

[–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 19 points 6 days ago (3 children)

why are you feeding her that and is she a person and not some object that resembles a flashlight.

[–] meow@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 5 days ago

It gets put in everything that hurts, and sometimes in things that dont. And no, she doesnt eat it, nor does ehe consume it rectally(thats my job).

[–] Venat0r@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

maybe she's consuming it rectally...

[–] urheber@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 5 days ago

Im kinda disgusted by you RN, my lips are dry.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 12 points 5 days ago

It gets used a lot faster when treating wounds or while a tattoo is healing.

[–] thingAmaBob@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

I go through so much of it. I have very sensitive skin, am prone to eczema, and am allergic to any alternative that actually moisturizes my skin as well (coconut, shea, lanolin, etc). I mix it with humectants to make my own moisturizer and lip balm. I’m genuinely scared if it becomes unavailable in my lifetime.

[–] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 12 points 6 days ago

I believe Vaseline is Unilever. Unfortunately, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Wish more products did. We make so much garbage just to feed profits of companies that find ways to make shit nobody actually needs because they make shit that they know will break.

[–] stickly@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

In addition other comments in this thread, petroleum jelly can expire. The jelly itself might be inert but as you open and scoop stuff out you're adding moisture, skin cells, bacteria and whatever else might be floating around.

You can definitely tell the difference between a well used container that's a few years old and a fresh one. If you notice any smell its probably time to toss it.
