So I worked at a dental office, and in the middle of a filling, a patient jolted up and ran to the bathroom. She was in there for 20 minutes or so, and then walked out of the office.

When we checked the bathroom, there was shit everywhere - hand prints smeared on the wall, footprints on the floor, the entire surface area of the toilet. I don’t know what evils occurred in there, but she didn’t clean a thing.

But here’s the part that really stunned me. An hour later she returned and said she was ready to finish her filling, like nothing ever happened

I think of myself as a reasonable person. If I shat all over someone’s bathroom, I’d rather spend an hour cleaning it than leave a mess like that. But if for some reason I did leave that mess, I would never show my face at that office again. I would go to some new office and ask to fix my weird half filled tooth and never speak of it again.

You are missing the story ... What happened when she came back?

[–] NottaLottaOcelot@lemmy.ca 7 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

We awkwardly completed her filling without speaking much. Just another shitty day in healthcare

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 3 points 7 hours ago

Damn, I wonder if that person is legit schizophrenic or something like that

[–] veni_vedi_veni@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago

Huh, must have been the wind

[–] slut@lemmy.world 9 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Went to use a restroom at a gas station last week it was closed and the dude said some homeless man went in there and spray painted all the walls and threw shit everywhere they even found piss inside of the soap dispenser

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

That's dedication

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 19 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Isn't it so much fun when you're in the middle of the city and just aren't allowed to go to the bathroom at all?

Interesting article, and one I am sympathetic to, but the inclusion of "Western" (and democratic, to a lesser extent) alongside educated, industrialized, and rich when transitioning from talking about a "lack of sanitation" to "adequate sewage disposal" was kinda... jarring?

Other cultures may not have the same type of porcelain thrones we use, but I think the EIR parts still have effective plumbing, even without being WD. Or do they just not have any of the same issues and pressures around public toilets?

people are disgusting. but it should be illegal to sell food and drink without providing toilets (which it is in certain countries).

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 14 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago) (1 children)

Often these signs mean you can use it if you're a customer. "Public" in those cases means rando off the street.

"Don't forget the key."

hands you a key chained to a 3 ton, triangular weight

[–] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 7 points 18 hours ago

Around here they all use keycodes, which I have been including in OSM for general use 😇

[–] ComfortableRaspberry@feddit.org 49 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Worked at a gas station. On my first day my supervisor gave me a folder with screenshots from the CCTV and told me to check it, before I give someone the key to the restroom. It was some kind of a black list with images of people who made such a mess that they checked the cams to see who it was and ban them eternally.

Once had to tell someone that they're not allowed to use the restroom due to previous incidents. Felt like I dodged a very disgusting bullet...

[–] jimmux@programming.dev 6 points 7 hours ago

I worked at a bunch of these places, usually the only person on site. It was near impossible for me to keep toilets clean while also keeping on top of everything else. It got pretty horrific in there at times.

[–] Francislewwis@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

You know it had to be REALLY bad for them to put up that sign.

[–] Chiarottide@lemmy.world 72 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They will soon find out that without a restroom the experiences will be even worse

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 40 points 1 day ago

"taking the toilet won't stop people from going to the bathroom"

[–] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have altered the deal…

[–] BC_viper@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Pray I don't alter it further.

Whatever happened, i know it involved shit, urine, blood, cum, vomit, abortion residue and used needles (worked in retail)

[–] bluegreenpurplepink@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago

And that was all in the corner of the dressing room, not the bathroom.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 4 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

It was probably the woman's restroom too. (Food service)

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 7 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Yeah, we had a problem like that in my food service journey in the 90's.

Monday:

Place is busy

Front end girl runs up to the manager, girls room wall is smeared.

Manager goes in to clean it

Wednesday:

place gets busy

Manger herself walks into the restroom and it's worse, comes back out to clean it. I offer to take care of it, i don't love the idea, but I'm not grossed out very easily. (honestly, it was better than cleaning the grease traps, those things are miserable)

Thursday:

place gets busy.

Manager checks on the restroom, it's clean

front end girl was taking her break on that side of the dining room.

One customer uses the restroom

Another front end girl goes in and the wall is smeared. Screams for the manager.

The customer looks all nervous and gets up to leave. The manager rips her a new asshole. Kicks her out in front of everyone in the dining room.

It was the 60yo who smelled strongly of cat urine. who'da thunk it.

I cleaned it again, got my pick of the shifts the rest of my days there. We never had another incident like that.

Of course, the men's room is just always covered in urine. Old men and young kids miss, even people with aim splash back out of the toilet enough to get it on the walls/floor/under the urinals.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I'm impressed the manager dealt with it rather than making one of you. That's leadership.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago

Especially in min-wage fast food, she was nice.

[–] deltapi@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I don't know what happened to them, but it used to be where I live that the bathroom would have floor-to-belly-height urinals and the entire bathroom floor would be gently sloped towards them, and the walls would be tiled to the same height.
This meant that cleanup could be done by blasting everything with industrial detergent/disinfectant and literally power washing it all into the urinal drains. Now in New construction I only see the wall mounted urinals, and a floor drain in the middle to meet code requirements, but often the cleaners don't know that they have to put water into that drain to prevent it evaporating out and letting sewer gasses flow into the room (ew.)

Overall a downgrade for both staff and visitors.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Enpissification.

Builder charges X for a bathroom, builds it out of cheaper fixtures, gets signoff from the client by using "premium" trims that cost them pennies more.

The f'd up part is that for most things being enshittified, we'd GLADLY pay $1 more for the nicer product for them to include $0.10 of screws they're saving by putthing crap together with plastic.

its deeper than that, Cost of operation. Who pays the cleaning staff to disinfect those tiles so bacterial growth doesn't occur? Plastics and many cheaper materials are bio-inhibitors. They can be covered in fecal and urine waste and not be literal petri dishes for bacteria, fungus's and mold.

they also look plain (IE: "Industrial", currently a desirable artistic trait. When we live in a society that is all doomer and see's everything for its resale "potential") and last a relatively long times(plastic erosion is significantly slower than cheap tile). In a era where operating a business is less about making or selling products you believe in, but making sure your investors (bank/shareholders) get paid. its one major cost(staff) off the top.

More so when most businesses rent the buildings they use, they do not own them. You want to blame anyone, blame the landlords that charge based on location, not based on business profits + their own costs.

[–] Croquette@sh.itjust.works 2 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Anecdotally, when I worked night shift in a restaurant, the women's bathroom was always way worst than the men's room

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 18 hours ago

Yeah, a bunch of piss really isn't a huge deal, but the women's room could be a legit biohazard.

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 35 points 1 day ago

I worked in a late night pizzeria that served the post-bar crowd. The amount of shit-filled undies (men’s and women’s) we’d find throw in the corner was unreal. So remember that folks, there’s a reasonable chance whoever you’re flirting with at 130am isn’t wearing undies because they’ve already shat themselves.

[–] BaroqueBobby@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Ah modern grill in lake view , food is good though

[–] legolasfanboy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’m sorry. I’ve never learned how to use the toilet. I’m trying to teach myself.

[–] legolasfanboy@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

Ah. I think I see where I went wrong. I need more green thumbs and less red thumbs.

[–] bluegreenpurplepink@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

What does the top say? I must know.

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

I like how this is both funny and sad at the same time.

While i know this is just a shitpost, i cant help but remember, in nearly all english speaking countries and excluding the few countries with no regulations, businesses must offer customers a restroom if they have a dining area... The reason is hygenic as much as biologically imperative...

There is no rules that state they cant /charge/ for restroom access however (EG: they have to buy food, meaning there is a method of tracking who went in by timestamp). Most businesses could avoid this with putting smart entry locks on the door, that scan a barcode on the reciept and every hour, having a shift manager check and log the state of the restroom to manage the cleanliness.

but thats money most businesses dont want to spend away from the primary income source. smh... its almost like "preventive" anything is a scare word to business owners.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

In my experience, these signs are the same as "Restroom is for customers only." Public means just coming in to use the restroom then leaving.

perfect example of "coffee is hot" signs/labels. I think we all deeply understand the sentiment that the general public, is in fact, generally willfully inconsiderate to themselves and others, when they want something lol

Unless you physically impede some one, to disrupt their flow, they will not think twice about desire fulfillment in today's society... Everyone needs to pee, but not everyone respects your need to pee.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

NYC has local laws that if you have less than 20 seats, you don't need to provide bathrooms. And because it's on the books and not rare, the businesses don't suffer all that much from it.

Honestly, doing my best to hold back the incoming splatter while desperately trying to scan the crinkled-up receipt that I haphazardly stuffed in my pocket on the way to the bathroom because I didn't think it was important sounds like such a traumatizing experience that I'd probably never eat there again, and would be a lot more likely to result in the mess that caused the policy in the first place.

Have you ever been inside of a gas station bathroom? I'm sure it was something like that, over and over. Once or twice is a bad experience, eventually it stops being worth it.

This must just be for the places not blessed by our midwestern lord and savior Kwik Trip. Most Kwik Trip restrooms I've been in are cleaner than my own bathroom.

Frank and Artemis?
